United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue Statement On The Virginia Expansion Franchise

August 20, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

The United Football League has seen an overwhelming amount of interest from local ownership groups to purchase the Virginia team.

In order to continue this process, the league has decided to take control of the Virginia team and over time will determine the best local ownership groups to partner with the league. Fortunately we have no financial pressure to rush this decision.

Doug Williams will continue in the role of General Manager and will manage football operations. Ed Reynolds will serve as team President and will oversee team operations on a day-to-day basis, beginning Monday, August 23, and will reside in Hampton Roads.

The league will make an announcement on September 1 regarding the home venue for the Virginia team as well as other aspects such as ticket sales and the naming of the team.

In due course we expect to announce local ownership, which will participate with the league in ownership of the team. Jim Speros will be considered among other candidates interested in purchasing an interest in the team.

We have found tremendous interest in the Hampton Roads area in the team, which will play as scheduled in 2011.

UFL Virginia team President Ed Reynolds quote and biographical information:

"Any time you have an opportunity to take advantage of coming back to your home state is an opportunity to relish and look forward to," said Reynolds. "It is an exciting opportunity to create synergy and establish a great product like the United Football League in a market that is dynamic and ready for professional football."

Prior to joining the UFL for the 2009 season as Vice President, Administration & Special Assistant to Commissioner, Ed Reynolds worked for twelve seasons with the National Football League in football operations and security.

In football operations he developed, implemented and administered the On-field / Pro-Line policies for all 32 teams and was responsible for all associated violation fines for players, coaches and teams. Reynolds developed and implemented the College Relations programs and the NFL high school coaches of the week programs in all 32 markets.

Reynolds began his playing career in the NFL as a free agent with the New England Patriots in 1983. He was named team MVP in 1989 and led the team in tackles for three seasons before spending two years with the New York Giants.

While playing in the NFL, Reynolds served in the Army Reserves as an infantry officer / weapons expert. During his fifteen-year military career, he oversaw every aspect of training for the units in the 80th Division. He handled all weapons qualifications, raising scores by 60%. He also assisted in the improvement in PT scores by 75%. He operated Range operations and handled unit security procedures.

Reynolds is a graduate of the University of Virginia, is married to Pamela Dudley and they have four outstanding sons: Ed, Joseph, Ethan and Jason.
