UFL Week 2 Notes

September 19, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Monday, September 19, 2011 - For only the second time in United Football League history, two teams with 1-0 records will face each other for sole possession of first place in the league standings when the Virginia Destroyers play their first-ever game at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex against the two-time defending UFL champion Las Vegas Locomotives on Saturday at 7pm EDT / 4pm PDT.

The Destroyers are coming off a 23-13 win in Week 1 at the Omaha Nighthawks, while the Locos took a 23-17 decision from the Sacramento Mountain Lions at Hornet Stadium to open the 2011 campaign and hit the road for a second successive week.

The only other 1-0 vs. 1-0 game in UFL history was between the Tuskers and Locos on October 14, 2009 at Sam Boyd Stadium, as Florida defeated Las Vegas on the road, 29-15, behind three Brooks Bollinger touchdown passes and a defense which racked up six sacks, which is still a UFL record

PACKING THEM IN ‚¬Â¦ MOUNTAIN LIONS SELL OUT IN SACRAMENTO

The UFL set a new league record for highest combined Week 1 attendance this year, as 35,774 fans came through the turnstiles at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha and Hornet Stadium. The 2011 attendance mark was a 52.3 percent increase over 2010, and a 40.3-percent increase over 2009.

Mountain Lions fans packed into their home stadium to record a sellout 19,938 attendance - the first time a UFL team has announced a sellout crowd on opening weekend. The Sacramento crowd totaled 1,813 more fans than the 18,125 average recorded at Hornet Stadium last season.

The three combined opening-weekend attendance figures are 25,495 in 2009 (Las Vegas and Florida), 23,487 in 2010 (Hartford and Las Vegas) and a new record 35,774 in 2011 as 19,938 attended in Sacramento and 15,836 in Omaha.

"We could not have been happier with the attendance," said Mountain Lions Senior Vice President JOE WAGONER. "There were two other major football events in Sacramento at the same time as ours and we still had more than 19,000 attend and announced a sellout. It goes to show that this team is meant for this market. The fans were lined up outside the parking lot at 4.30 waiting to tailgate. Fans could not wait to see their fellow fans again. It was like a reunion of sorts and the place was rocking."

THE UFL - POWERED BY VEETLE AND REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORKS

The United Football League's opening week game between the Sacramento Mountain Lions and Las Vegas Locomotives was streamed live on the official UFL website [2]www.UFL-Football.com, powered by Veetle and was shown locally in the Sacramento and Las Vegas markets.

For the first time in its three-year history, the UFL has targeted regional sports networks in its home cities and the Mountain Lions-Locos clash was aired by Comcast SportsNet California and also broadcast on Cox Cable CBS Las Vegas.

"We feel it is important to try to bring fans in each team's region live coverage of their team, particularly when they are on the road," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "People have a familiarity with these channels and partnering with them underlines our focus on building local interest and buzz in our cities."

The Comcast broadcast shown on Cox CBS and through the web stream featured the game from Hornet Stadium at Sacramento State as Sacramento sportscaster GRANT NAPEAR was joined by former NFL coach JERRY GLANVILLE, former Cal and NFL quarterback MIKE PAWLAWSKI and radio personality DAN DIBLEY.

Thanks to the Veetle stream, almost 20,000 fans also tuned in en masse to watch the defending champion Locos visit the Mountain Lions on their iPhone, iPad and Android devices by clicking through the ‚¬ËœWatch Live' link on the UFL website homepage.

The stream is still available for fans to watch now at [3]www.UFL-Football.com.

UFL QUOTABLES

On his return to coaching, Destroyers head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER said: "It's delightful. The essence of it for me is I'm a teacher. I love to teach the game of football to these young men. I get great gratification and satisfaction seeing them use things I didn't have the skill set to do as a player. I live vicariously through them and I walk out of here feeling like - Hey, we won this one!"

On his team opening the defense of their UFL crown with a win, Locos head coach JIM FASSEL said: "Any time you can go on the road and win the first game, it's good. It's hard to win on the road. I thought Chase Clement played really well. I thought he was anxious at the beginning of the game but he really settled down. That's pretty normal for a first game for any quarterback. We got him settled down a little bit."
