Tyler Amaya Re-Joins Slam

BELLINGHAM, Wash.-Forward Tyler Amaya has returned to the Bellingham Slam after playing this spring with a team in New Zealand, the team announced today. He is expected to be in the lineup when the Slam plays the Tacoma Tide in a road contest on Thursday.

Amaya, a 6-foot-6 former WesternWashingtonUniversityand Mount VernonHigh Schoolstandout, just completed a full season with the Otago Gold Nuggets in New Zealand's top division. In 18 games, Amaya ranked as the league's fourth-best scorer, averaging 22.9 points per game. He also averaged 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game, good for fifth-best in the league. Twice Amaya scored over 30 points in a game.

Amaya, who was Bellingham's leading scorer in 2009 with a 23.6 points per game scoring average, re-joins his former team just as they are preparing for the International Basketball League playoff tournament, which begins in two weeks. Two years ago, Amaya was instrumental is helping the Slam capture the 2008 IBL Championship. In the title game, Amaya scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and earned game co-MVP honors.

League rules require that players see action in a minimum of three regular season games in order to be eligible to participate in the postseason. The Slam have four regular season games remaining.

Bellinghamfans will have their first chance to see Amaya play when the Slam host the Oregon Waves on Sunday, with a 5 p.m.tip-off is set for Whatcom Pavilion.
