Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam have announced that forward Tyler Amaya has been invited to a workout with the NBA's Houston Rockets. Amaya is in Houston this week training with several of the Rockets' coaches and players, including Yao Ming and former Pac-10 stars Aaron Brooks and Chase Budinger.

Amaya is coming off a superb sophomore season with the Slam in which he led the team in both scoring an rebounding, with averages of 23.6 points and 11.1 boards per game. In 2008, he was instrumental in helping the Slam capture the International Basketball League championship. Last winter, Amaya suited up for the Guangdong Southern Tigers, a top team in the Chinese Basketball Association.

A graduate of Western Washington, Amaya helped lead the Vikings to back-to-back NCAA-II West Regional Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006. He averaged 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game during his senior season at WWU.

While his workout with the Rockets is unlikely to result in a contract offer from the squad, training with NBA-caliber talent will aid Amaya as he continue his career in either the NBA's Development League or with a team overseas.
