Two third-period goals lift U.S. Nat'l under 17 team past Mahoning Valley

BOARDMAN, Ohio - David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) scored two goals and Tyler Amburgey (Rowlett, Texas) added another, to stake the U.S. National Under-17 Team to a 3-2 win over Mahoning Valley at the Boardman Ice Zone Friday night.

After Tyler Hirschfeld put the Phantoms ahead, 1-0, with a power-play goal at the 11:33 mark of the first period, Team USA tied the game up at 18:27 of the stanza when Wohlberg notched an unassisted marker.

Neither team lit up the scoreboard again until Derek Graham's goal at 3:58 of the third period gave Mahoning Valley its second lead of the evening.

Team USA responded with the final two goals of the game, paving the way for a one-goal victory. Wohlberg tallied his second marker of the contest at 8:11, before Amburgey provided the game-winner at 14:35. Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) was credited with an assist on Amburgey's marker.

Brandon Maxwell (Winter Park, Fla.) improved to 11-9-0 on the season for Team USA, thanks to his 34-save performance. Garrett Bartus stopped 17 shots for Mahoning Valley.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team (19-18-1) and Mahoning Valley play again tomorrow night at the Boardman Ice Zone. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET.
