Two Nationals to Represent USA at Bowhunter Cup
September 20, 2011 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Hamilton Nationals News Release
(Rochester, September 20)... Two members of the Hamilton Nationals will hit the international stage on Sunday, October 16th, as the Iroquois Nationals host the U.S. Men's National Indoor Lacrosse Team in the Second Bowhunter Cup. The game will be held at the Oneida Indian Nation's Turning Stone Resort Casino at 6:00 p.m. at the Event Center.
Nationals midfielder Joe Walters and Head Coach Regy Thorpe will represent the United States in the second annual event. Both participated in the first Bowhunter Cup, which resulted in a 13-11 American victory at the War Memorial at Oncenter in Syracuse. The three players were announced as Team USA unveiled its 18-man roster for the game.
"I look forward to suiting up for team USA in the upcoming Bowhunter Cup. Whenever you represent your country it is a special opportunity," said Walters, who played for the United States and won a silver medal at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championships.
For Walters, the honor comes just after an appearance in the Major League Lacrosse Finals with the Hamilton Nationals and his first ever Mann Cup title with the Brampton Excelsiors. Walters was fifth in the MLL with 39 points and second with a team-record 20 assists. The Rochester, NY, native was second in points among MLL midfielders and earned All-MLL Team honors. Walters also had an impressive Mann Cup, finishing tied for second in the series with 13 points (3+10) in five games. He will enter his fourth season with the National Lacrosse League Rochester Knighthawks in 2012.
Thorpe will serve as one of Team USA's assistant coaches and work alongside Head Coach Tom Ryan, and assistant coaches Randy Fraser and Blane Harrison. This season, Thorpe led the Nationals to a second-place tie with the Denver Outlaws with a 7-5 record. In the postseason, the Nationals defeated Denver to advance to the MLL Finals where they dropped a 10-9 decision to the Boston Cannons. The Elbridge, NY, native brings 15 seasons of box lacrosse playing experience to the bench, having spent his entire career with the Rochester Knighthawks.
"I am excited to be helping coach a team I represented for years," said Thorpe, who played for Team USA in the 2002 and 2004 Heritage Cups, the 2007 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships and the 2010 Bowhunter Cup. "It's certainly always special when you can compete for your country. I am excited to work with some of the veteran players as well as some hungry younger players trying to prove themselves. It also will be exciting to coach against some of the best Native Americans, as they will be fired up to take the Bowhunter Cup from us."
For this year's event, tickets, priced at $20 for upper bowl reserved seating and $10 for lower bowl general admission (or obstructed view) for adults, or $10 (all seats) for youth 12 and under, are available at the Turning Stone Box Office or by calling 361-SHOW or toll-free at 1-877-833-SHOW.
