Two Former Frost Heaves En Route to Saint John
January 31, 2011 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Saint John Riptide News Release
Two former Vermont Frost Heaves players are en route to Saint John: 6'9 power forward Ross Demasi and 5'11 point guard Dwuan Rice.
Demasi was selected by Saint John in the Vermont Dispersal Draft which was held after the Vermont Frost Heaves announced that they had ceased operations. Rice, who was unselected in the draft although he was considered by many to be the best available player, became a free agent.
Both Demasi and Rice have yet to be added to the Saint John Mill Rats active PBL roster.
"Decisions will be made about our active roster just prior to the deadline for Thursday's game," stated Mill Rats Head Coach Jaren Jackson. "We wanted to get a look at these guys, see them compete in practice, and also review our health situation before we decide."
Rice brings a championship pedigree with him. He was MVP of the ABA Finals in 2008 in leading Vermont to their second consecutive league championship. A month later he helped the Idaho Stampede win an NBA Development League title. He is currently the PBL's leader in assists and steals.
Demasi was a PBL All Star last season and should help shore up the Mill Rats rebounding concerns.
The Saint John Mill Rats (2-4) host the division leading Quebec Kebs (6-2) on Thursday night at 7:00pm at Harbour Station.
