March 25, 2009 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
Philadelphia Force News Release
Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Force would like to congratulate two of their draft picks from the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft for being named a Lowe's Senior Class Award candidate. Outfielder's Lillian Hammond, the 9th overall pick in the draft out of the University of Tennessee, and Danielle Kinley, the Force's first pick in the 4th round, from Penn State University, were named as candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
The CLASS Award, Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, celebrates success on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community. Eligibility for the award compromises the student-athlete being classified as an NCAA Division I senior while having notable achievements in four areas of excellence: Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition.
Lowe's, a partner of the NCAA, expanded the award in 2007 to include different collegiate sports, including softball.
Notable sportscaster, Dick Enberg, serves as Honorary Chairman for the award, and created it to honor senior student-athletes who remain in college while completing their athletic eligibility. In 2001 he came up with the idea in response to men's basketball players leaving school early for the NBA.
Currently the 2009 list is composed of 30 players from 29 different schools, with University of Alabama having two players. Halfway through the season the list will be trimmed to 10 finalists, which will then be distributed to various media, coaches and fans. The winner will be announced and recognized at the 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Last years winner was Angela Tincher, pitcher, from Virginia Tech University, who was drafted in the first round of the 2008 NPF Senior Draft by the Akron Racers.
