Two Break Clear Of Chasing Pack As Race To Reach World Bowl Intensifies

May 22, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

WITH four weeks of the 2007 NFL Europa regular season remaining, two clubs have broken clear of the chasing pack, albeit by just one game.

While the Frankfurt Galaxy and Cologne Centurions top the standings with 4-2 records, the Amsterdam Admirals and Hamburg Sea Devils are just one game back, meaning the race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV looks set to go down to the wire.

There will be another early start to the action in Week 7 when the Amsterdam Admirals (3-3) welcome the Cologne Centurions (4-2) to the Netherlands for their third Friday Night Football contest of the season. The Admirals will be full of confidence having won their first Friday night game in club history last weekend.

On Saturday, the Berlin Thunder (2-4) will look to snap a two-game losing streak when they travel to take on the Hamburg Sea Devils (3-3) at AOL Arena.

The Week 7 action concludes with the second meeting of the season between Deutschland Derby rivals as the Frankfurt Galaxy (4-2) plays host to the Rhein Fire (2-4) at Commerzbank Arena - site of NFL Europa's championship game on Saturday, June 23 - where they are unbeaten in three contests this season.

After seeing his Admirals explode for 41 points against the Sea Devils last weekend, Amsterdam head coach BART ANDRUS is demanding his club makes a push for a World Bowl berth - but he knows the race to the title game will be extremely competitive.

He says: "It could be any two of the six, it really could. The talent is so balanced in this league and I think that is the case this year more than any other. In the last seven years, I haven't seen it this balanced before."

Taking on the Admirals on Friday night will be a Centurions club that overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Rhein Fire last week.

Cologne head coach DAVID DUGGAN says: "I am proud of our football team. We were able to overcome three turnovers and a field goal that hit the upright. We had some adversity and it's a case of how you respond to that. Good teams can come back from that type of situation and I'm proud of our team for doing so."

Berlin Thunder head coach JOHN ALLEN is looking for a more complete performance from his team when they visit the Hamburg Sea Devils on Saturday.

Despite losing his last two games, Allen says: "I love the makeup of our team and I wouldn't trade it for any other team in this league. We just have to stay focused and work on the details of the game. When we do that, we've shown what this team is capable of doing."

Hamburg head coach VINCE MARTINO predicts a critical time ahead for his Sea Devils as they prepare to face Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt and Rhein in the final month of the 2007 season.

He says: "We're still in it. We've got the teams that are in the lead in the league still in front of us and we've just got to play especially well with all of the clubs bunched up. We've got to win this first one at home against Berlin and then we play the two teams in front of us. We can still control our destiny."

Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ will be working overtime to pick his players up this week following their heartbreaking loss to Cologne last weekend.

He says: "That loss hurt more than any other I have had in this league. I'm upset that we couldn't hold on at the end. I'm upset that we didn't make the plays on offense or defense. They're not automatic. You have to make them every time and you have to have toughness for the entire game."

Frankfurt Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES goes into the Deutschland Derby full of confidence after his team snapped a two-game losing streak with a comprehensive win over Berlin that kept them top of the standings.

He says: "That was a big win for us after having two losses on the road. To come back home and play well in front of our own crowd, I thought that was great. Now we have to get prepared for next week because that will be another very important game for us."

Quarterbacks proving their worth in NFLE 2007 season

ONE of the biggest benefits of NFL Europa is that it provides NFL coaching staffs and scouts with an accurate indicator of how talented young prospects will perform in live game conditions.

And that has especially been the case for quarterbacks, who get to prove their worth in pressure situations in real games in front of thousands of fans across Europe and many more watching on the NFL Network in the United States.

NFL Europa has a proud tradition when it comes to producing star NFL quarterbacks as the league's alumni includes KURT WARNER, JAKE DELHOMME, BRAD JOHNSON, DAMON HUARD and JON KITNA.

And the 2007 season could prove to be a vintage year for NFL Europa as quarterbacks across the league have been producing outstanding performances on a regular basis.

During last weekend's meeting in the Netherlands, Amsterdam's DREW OLSON (Baltimore Ravens) and Hamburg's CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins) combined to throw for 447 yards and 6 touchdowns. Olson posted a passer rating of 112.3, while Bramlet's was an impressive 101.1.

Such performances have become the norm this season. Quarterbacks attempting at least 10 passes in a game have posted a 100+ rating on 12 occasions.

Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS, a former quarterbacks coach with the Tennessee Titans, has high hopes for his starting QB and was full of praise for Olson following his game-winning display against Hamburg last week.

He says: "I felt all along that Drew would have a breakout game. This was probably the one. He was throwing the ball with confidence and his rating was very high.

"Now the key is for him to continue to play like that. That's what I have said to him. If you want to be one of the 96 quarterbacks in the world that make a living playing professional football in the NFL, then you have to be consistent from week to week."

Big crowds, big plays and close games highlight 2007 campaign

WITH an array of big plays, close games and dramatic finishes, the 2007 NFL Europa season has provided plenty of excitement for the record crowds on hand across Germany and the Netherlands.

Through six weeks of action, NFL Europa is averaging 20,552 fans per game and is on pace to smash the single-season record of 18,965 set during the 2005 campaign.

Here is a look at the top seasons in NFL Europa history in terms of average attendance, including the current 2007 campaign:

Season Avg Attendance

2007 (thru 6 wks) 20,552

2005 18,965

2001 18,573

2000 18,102

The 2007 campaign has also seen lots of big plays with a total of 30 covering 40 yards or more. That figure has this season on pace to challenge the record of 59 40-yard plays set in 2006.

Here is a look at the top five plays this season in terms of distance:

Player/Team Play Details

C. Barclay (Ber) 99-yd kickoff return TD

S. Mitchell (Fra) 81-yd interception return TD

Q. Griffin (Ham) 79-yd kickoff return

B. Middleton (Fra) 71-yd punt return TD

A. Hosack (Fra) 65-yd TD reception

J. Enzor (Rhe) 65-yd interception return TD

And if watching close football games is your thing, then NFL Europa is the place for you. A total of 11 of the 18 games played to date have been decided by one score or less (8 points).

Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS says: "The games in this league are very entertaining for the fans who pay to come and see them. They are nearly always very exciting until the very end."

NFLE FACTS:Smith ties mark

JONATHAN SMITH became the fifth player in NFL Europa history - and the third Amsterdam Admiral - to score a league record 4 touchdowns in a game. The other men to achieve the feat were CHAD LUCAS (Amsterdam 2006), KEN SIMONTON (Scotland 2003), RAFAEL COOPER (Amsterdam 2002) and MIKE GREEN (Barcelona 2001). Wide receiver Lucas is the only one of the group who is not a running back.

Dominant o-line provides strong platform for victory for Galaxy

ANY coach worth his salt will tell you that football games are won and lost in the trenches. If that is the case, it is hardly surprising that the Frankfurt Galaxy sits atop the NFLE standings with a 4-2 record.

The Galaxy offensive line has been one of the league's dominant units this season, helping Frankfurt become NFL Europa's leading attack with an average of 340 yards per game.

With CHARLES MISSANT at center, EMMANUEL AKAH and MATT McCHESNEY (New York Jets) at guard, and BOBBY HARRIS and JASON MURPHY (Seattle Seahawks) occupying the tackle positions, Frankfurt's front five was especially dominant against Berlin last weekend.

The offensive line paved the way for the Galaxy to rush for 208 yards and three touchdowns at an average of 5.2 yards per carry. They also held Berlin without a sack.

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES says: "We have to give thanks to our offensive line - we put this game on their shoulders and they did what we expected them to do. They did a real good job."

Thanks to their strong offensive line, Frankfurt leads NFL Europa with an average of 132.8 rushing yards per game and 4.7 yards per carry. The unit also ranks second in fewest sacks allowed, having conceded just nine from 186 dropbacks through six games.

Frankfurt running back CHARLES ANTHONY, who rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns behind some strong blocking last weekend, adds: "I had a great game but it was a team effort. Our line always helps us out but this time they played real big. They played a huge role in this game with their blocks."

McCready remains positive

DESPITE seeing his 2007 season end prematurely due to a shoulder injury, Hamburg Sea Devils English wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY remains positive.

NFL Europa's second-ranked all-time receiver in receptions and yards says: "I was relieved to hear that in the long run this injury is not going to slow me down too much and in three or four months I should be as good as new. It's good to know it's not career-ending.

"We have a good team and I think we have a chance to do something pretty special this year. It's frustrating that I'm not really going to be part of it on the field. I hope to be part of it behind the scenes and off the field. I expect the guys to come back and play well against Berlin and then do what they need to do to get to the World Bowl."

McCready caught 20 passes for 242 yards and 2 scores before hurting his shoulder at Amsterdam last week.

Big play receivers to feature in Deutschland Derby re-match

THERE will be key performers all over the field when the Rhein Fire and Frankfurt Galaxy meet for the second time this season in Week 7.

But followers of a game that has huge World Bowl implications for both teams would do well to pay close attention to a pair of play-making wide receivers who could very well steal the headlines.

Frankfurt Galaxy third-year wide receiver AARON HOSACK may not lead his team in receptions this season, but he certainly ranks first in terms of big plays.

Hosack has 6 receptions for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns this season at an average of 39.2 yards per catch.

Here are details of Hosack's four receptions covering 40 yards or more this season:

Opponent Play Details

vs Hamburg (Wk 3) 65-yd TD reception

vs Amsterdam (Wk 1) 61-yd TD reception

vs Berlin (Wk 6) 43-yd reception

vs Amsterdam (Wk 1) 41-yd TD reception

When the Fire goes to the air, they will target Miami Dolphins-allocated wide receiver P.K. SAM, who is hitting top form at exactly the right stage of the season.

Here is a look a look at how Sam has elevated his game in recent weeks:

First 4 weeks: 9 receptions for 152 yds and 0 TD

Last 2 weeks: 15 receptions for 236 yds and 3 TD

Sam, who has receptions covering 45 and 46 yards this season, ranks second in NFL Europa with 388 receiving yards on 24 receptions (16.2 average).

He has posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving days against Frankfurt in Week 5 and Cologne in Week 6.

Pair of punt blocks in Week 6

Week 6 was not a good one to be a punter in NFL Europa as two kicks were blocked, with one being returned for a touchdown.

During Berlin's loss at Frankfurt, linebacker TIM GOODWELL (Green Bay Packers) blocked a fourth quarter punt from KYLE BASLER (Cleveland Browns).

And the Cologne Centurions tied the scores in the fourth period of their game against the Rhein Fire when MARTIN PATTERSON blocked a punt by DANNY BAUGHER (New England Patriots) and fellow linebacker CRAIG KOBEL (Philadelphia Eagles) returned the ball 10 yards for a touchdown.

A total of 4 punts have been blocked this season.

Lantz not afraid to roll the dice

IT'S time to find out who the risk-takers are in NFL Europa. Who are the coaches willing to roll the dice and go for it on fourth down in order to give their team the best shot at victory?

Through the opening six weeks of the 2007 campaign, Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ has shown the most willingness to take a gamble on fourth down, going for it a league-high 10 times.

The 2004 Coach of the Year has even called a fake field goal that resulted in a 20-yard run by kicker CONNOR HUGHES (Pittsburgh Steelers), setting up a touchdown.

Amsterdam Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS has gone for it a league-low 3 times on fourth down, while Frankfurt's MIKE JONES has rolled the dice just 4 times, although one of those resulted in a 62-yard touchdown run by safety CHRIS LASKOWSKI on a fake punt.

Here is a look at the success rates of all six teams on fourth down:

Team Attempts Success %

Hamburg 3 of 5 60.0

Cologne 3 of 5 60.0

Frankfurt 2 of 4 50.0

Rhein 4 of 10 40.0

Berlin 3 of 9 33.3

Amsterdam 1 of 3 33.3

While converting on fourth down is a bonus for an offense, being consistently successful on third down is essential if you want to win football games.

Here is a look at the success rates of all six teams on third down:

Team Attempts Success %

Amsterdam 35 of 74 47.3

Berlin 35 of 78 44.9

Frankfurt 32 of 74 43.2

Cologne 33 of 81 40.7

Hamburg 24 of 64 37.5

Rhein 30 of 83 36.1

NFLE FACTS:Purple Patch

Frankfurt Galaxy powered their way to a 35-7 victory over the Berlin Thunder last weekend by scoring four touchdowns in as many possessions between the first and third periods. After scoring those four touchdowns, the Galaxy's remaining drives in the game ended with a missed field goal, an interception, a punt, a blocked punt and kneel-downs to end the game
