Florida Tuskers News Release
ORLANDO, FL - MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2010-The Florida Tuskers continued to make roster moves on Monday afternoon, releasing two more players, including former University of South Florida quarterback standout Matt Grothe.
Grothe was competing for the back-up quarterback spot with veteran Chris Greisen.
"Matt came in and did some good things and showed continued improvement throughout camp," Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "Unfortunately with a 52-man roster, we are limited to two quarterback spots. Brooks Bollinger is the returning league MVP and clearly our number one quarterback. Chris is a very good player and a veteran who knows our system. In the end I just felt better going with the more experienced player. Matt's a young guy and hopefully he will get other opportunities to continue his playing career at the professional level."
Grothe completed 717 of 1048 passes (68.4%) for 8,669 yards and 49 touchdowns in his career with the USF Bulls. He left school as the all-time leader in total offense for the Big East Conference.
In other moves, the Tuskers also released kicker Carlos Martinez. A kicker for the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, Martinez had made 12 of 23 (52%) field goal attempts and 103 of 114 (90.3%) extra point attempts during the 2010 regular season for Orlando.
Florida also brought tight end Jason Pociask in to camp. The Tuskers had acquired the UFL rights of the former University of Wisconsin standout just prior to the start of training camp but Pociask ended up signing with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was released this past weekend. A fifth round pick of the New York Jets in 2006, Pociask also spent time with the New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks.
"We continue to adjust our roster with the goal of finding our 52 best football players for our season opener at Las Vegas," Gruden added. The Tuskers will break training camp tomorrow and begin in-season preparations for Las Vegas on Wednesday.
