Tuskers Open Camp on Monday, Gruden Analyzes His Team
August 12, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Florida Tuskers News Release
New head coach Jay Gruden will welcome 70 players on Monday (Aug. 16) as the Florida Tuskers open training camp for the 2010 season.
Gruden begins his first-year as head coach of the Tuskers, after serving as the team's offensive coordinator under Jim Haslett last season. When Haslett left to become defensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins, the UFL promoted Gruden. As the Tuskers offensive coordinator, Gruden led the highest scoring offense in the UFL last season as the team recorded a perfect 6-0 season before losing in overtime to Las Vegas in the UFL's first championship game.
"I'm excited to get started," Gruden said. "We have a terrific base of players from last year returning and some outstanding new prospects. We obviously want to take that final step and bring a championship back to Orlando."
Gruden is no stranger to winning championships. As a quarterback, he captured four ArenaBowl titles in six seasons with the Tampa Bay Storm. Taking over as head coach of the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, Gruden took his team to four championship games and won two more titles. He also won a Super Bowl ring while serving as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Bucs in 2002.
As has been his policy, Gruden will run his training camp with one long morning session, instead of the traditional two-a-days that are common in most training camps. Generally speaking, the team will hit the field each morning at 9 a.m. and finish practice at around noon; with an extended break for the players at around 10:45 a.m.
"With the heat and humidity in Florida, you are always dealing with thunderstorms in the afternoon on a daily basis," Gruden said. "By going one long practice in the morning you usually take the weather out of the equation, with the added benefit of giving the players and coaches a longer time to recuperate."
All Tuskers practices will be conducted at the Florida Citrus Bowl Complex (Thunder and McCracken Fields) and are open to both the public and the media. Important training camp dates include:
