
Turner Cup Tidbits
April 27, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
GAME FOUR:
The Komets took their 2-1 series lead into Kalamazoo Wednesday night, but Kalamazoo edged out Fort Wayne by a score of 2-0. Kalamazoo goaltender Joel Martin earned the first shutout of the 2009 Turner Cup Playoffs, making a total of 51 saves to keep the K-Wings alive in the series. Playing shorthanded on the blue line, Kalamazoo had offensive production from defenseman John Glavota and right wing Justin Cross, who each found the back of the net. Nick Boucher was in goal for the Komets, making 22 saves in the loss.
GAME FIVE:
With the series even at two games a piece, both teams were looking to take over the series. With no scoring in the first, both teams got on the board with two goals each in the second, with three of the four goals coming on the power play. After a scoreless third, the game went to the series second overall overtime game. Komet forward Justin Hodgman scored the game winning goal at the 7:09 mark of overtime to give the Komets a 3-2 win, and a 3-2 series lead over Kalamazoo.
GAME SIX:
The K-Wings entered Saturday night looking to force a game seven in the series by jumping off to an early 2-0 lead, scoring two goals within the first 11 minutes. Fort Wayne answered back the second half of the first, netting two of their own to even the score. Kalamazoo's Mark Nebus scored the lone tally of the second period, but the third stanza was all Komets as Justin Hodgman, Leo Thomas (game-winner) and David Hukalo each notched in a goal to help keep the Komets ahead. The Komets won by a score of 5-2, earning their 13th IHL Turner Cup Finals appearance in franchise history.
SERIES "B": 2-PORT HURON vs. 3-MUSKEGON (Muskegon won series, 4-2)
GAME THREE:
Rookies stepped up big for the Lumberjacks in Game Three, coming out victorious with a 6-5 win in overtime.. The âJacks rookies scored four of Muskegon's six goals. John Grabarek (2 goals), Alec Kirschner (1 goal) and the overtime hero Steven Later (1 goal) all chipped in the scoring column, all three notching in their first points in the 2009 playoffs. Muskegon went with rookie Kevin Armstrong in goal, earning his first professional playoff win, making 34 saves.
GAME FOUR:
Wednesday night, the Lumberjacks continued their winning ways over the Icehawks. Armstrong got the nod between the pipes for the second straight night, earning his second victory of the postseason by turning away 33 of 35 shots he faced. IHL Regular Season MVP Todd Robinson had a three point night, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist for the âJacks, recording his second straight three-point night. The Icehawks put on the pressure midway through the third scoring two goals within three minutes, but it was not enough as the Lumberjacks skated away with the 3-2 victory.
GAME FIVE:
After entering the night with a 3-1 series lead, the Lumberjacks looked to finish things off on the road in Port Huron. After Port Huron took an early 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest, Muskegon answered back with two of their own in the first six minutes of the second period. Icehawks notched in another midway through the second, followed by a Lumberjacks goal in the third that evened the score to force overtime. Rookie Derek Patrosso netted the game-winning goal in overtime for the Icehawks giving them a 4-3 victory and sending the series back to Muskegon.
GAME SIX:
Muskegon's Billy Collins began the scoring at the 13:39 mark of the opening period, scoring the teams' first shorthanded goal of the playoffs. Port Huron's Steve Rymsha scored the first goal for the Icehawks early in the second and teammate Tab Lardner scored late in the third, but it was not enough as Bouchard earned the game-winning goal at the 11:52 mark of the second period. Lumberjacks forward Luke Stauffacher netted in two of the âJacks five goals while defenseman Steven Later capped off the scoring with an unassisted empty-netter at the 19:14 mark of the third period helping push Muskegon to a 5-2 victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Fort Wayne Komets will face-off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a best-of-seven series for their chance to hoist the Turner Cup. The finals will begin Thursday, April 30th when Muskegon travels to Fort Wayne.
