DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - As Kelly Conway put potential members of the Daytona Beach Hawgs dance team through their paces, Head Coach/General Manager Ervin Bryson noticed the intensity of his nine-time national champion dance team coordinator.

Kelly Conway keeps a close eye on Saturday's Dance Team Tryout. "I thought I had a game face, but man, Kelly has me beat,'' Bryson said. "I am very impressed."

Conway laughed when he heard about Bryson's remarks.

"He hasn't seen my real game face,'' Conway said. "If he thinks today was tough...

No, Conway isn't some sort of dance nazi, but she does have a high standard when it comes to putting a team on the field, as testified by the success of the New Smyrna Beach High School Showdolls.

On Saturday, she put 15 girls through a strenuous workout, include jazz and high-kick routines, to evaluate the talent for the inaugural group of dancers for the National Indoor Football League expansion team that begins play March 2005. When the dancing was over, Conway then conducted personal interviews to gage the dancers' commitment.

"There was a lot of potential here today,'' Conway said.

The Hawgs brought in a crew of massage therapists for the dancers to cope with the post-tryout soreness.

"We're going to do everything we can for the dancers,'' Bryson said. "They play an important role in the complete package.

A second tryout will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at New Smyrna Beach High to finalize the team.
