Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio - Nathan Urbaniak scored a natural hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the game, and added a helper for good measure, to lead the Traverse City North Stars to a 4-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Phantoms on Saturday night at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
Urbaniak opened the scoring midway through the first, stepping out from behind the net and burying a wrap-around between the legs of Phantoms goaltender Jordan Tibbett, putting the Stars up 1-0 after one.
Urbaniak would collect his second of the night at 7:48 of the middle frame, and his third of the game, and 22nd of the season, on the powerplay at 12:55.
Kory Kaunisto then worked a give-and-go with Urbaniak to perfection to put the Stars up 4-0 after two periods.
Kyle Verbeek's powerplay tally at the 5:29 mark of the third period gave the Phantoms new life.
Nick Kenney also answered the bell, notching his second goal of the weekend at 15:29, tipping home a Chad Boeckman pass. It was too little, too late, however, for the Phantoms.
Mahoning Valley scored a powerplay goal for the fifth straight game, going 1 for 6 on the night. Traverse City (15-19-11, 41 points) was 3 for 8 with the man-advantage.
Tibbett stopped 34 of 38 Stars shots in the losing effort and fell to 7-7-1 on the season. Traverse City goaltender Chris Paliafito made 30 saves to take home his fifth win of the year.
Next up, the Phantoms (27-14-4, 58 points) travel to Chesterfield, Mo. for the second time this season, meeting the St. Louis Bandits in a showdown between the North Division's top two teams. Game time from the Summit Center is slated for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday. Catch all the action live on www.mvpphantoms.com.
The Mahoning Valley Phantoms are owned by the B.J. Alan Company - Phantom Fireworks, located in Youngstown, Ohio.
