Toros Walden Named GBL Rookie Pitcher of the Year

October 7, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - Tucson Toros Pitcher Cody Walden has been named by the Golden Baseball League as the league's 2010 Rookie Pitcher of the Year.

Walden, a Tucson native who attended Santa Rita High School, made his professional debut with the Toros in 2010 going 4-1 while seeing time in both the rotation and the bullpen.

His 3.44 ERA was the lowest for any Toro who started at least 5 games this season.

The lefthander showed fantastic control with Tucson, walking just 13 in 65 1/3 innings and issuing the fewest free passes in the league for pitchers with at least 55 innings pitched.

He wrapped up the season by helping the Lincoln Salt Dogs of the American Association clinch a playoff spot following an August trade.

Cody played two years at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona and another two years at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia.

He also pitched for the collegiate semi-pro Tucson Nationals of the Pacific Southwest Baseball League.

The Tucson Toros finished 46-43 with a winning record for the second consecutive season thanks in part to Walden's phenomenal debut campaign.
