
Toronto Nationals Fall to Boston Cannons

TORONTO - The Toronto Nationals were defeated on the road tonight by the Boston Cannons at Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA in a physical game by a score of 19-15.
Cannons forward Sean Morris opened the scoring for Boston before Merrick Thomson immediately responded to put Toronto on the board early on. Matt Alrich scored shortly after giving Boston a 2-1 lead five minutes into the first quarter. Boston took a three goal lead after Greg Downing and rookie Brandon Corp each put one past starting Nationals goaltender Doc Schneider.
Attacker Delby Powless gave Toronto another goal before Corp responded with his second of the night with under ten seconds left on the clock ending the quarter 5-2 in Boston's favour.
Nationals midfielder Geoff Snider won the second quarter opening faceoff and carried the ball to the net to open scoring for Toronto before Matt Casey put another on the board for Boston. The Cannons scored three back to back goals giving the home team a five goal lead from Morris, midfielder Matt Poskay and a shorthanded goal from Corp.
Colin Doyle put his first of the game past Boston goaltender Mike Levin but the celebration was short lived when Morris scored his third of the night for the Cannons resulting in a 10-4 Boston lead heading into the half. Downing scored first for Boston putting one past Nationals second half goaltender Brett Queener to open the third quarter. The Nationals saw a four point run starting with Jeff Zywicki putting one past Levin and followed by back to back unassisted goals from Snider, including one 2 point goal cutting the Boston lead to three.
Poskay and Paul Rabil each scored for Boston bringing the score to 13-8 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter. Brodie Merrill and the Nationals defence had shut down Rabil, the Cannons' star midfielder in the first half holding him to just one assist.
The two teams exchanged goals with Chris Eck and Corp each scoring for Boston and Jordan Hall and Powless putting another two on the board for Toronto. Downing put his third of the night in the back of the net just before the quarter ended 16-10 in favour of the Cannons.
Nationals attacker Shawn Williams and Snider put back to back goals past Levin three minutes into the final quarter keeping Toronto in the game. Kevin Cassese and Morris scored two for Boston before Nationals leading scorer Merrick Thomson put his second of the night cutting the Boston lead to five.
With just over five minutes left in the game, Rabil scored for the Cannons and Doyle gave one more to Toronto followed by another for the Nationals from defender Brodie Merrill but time ran out and the Boston Cannons took the decision 19-15.
The Nationals (4-3) were led by Geoff Snider who tallied five points (4 goal, 1 2pt goal, 0 assist) and Sean Morris led Boston with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists) and also named Bud Light game MVP.
Also scoring for the Nationals were Colin Doyle, Delby Powless and Merrick Thomson each with two goals. Brodie Merrill, Jordan Hall, Jeff Zywicki and Shawn Williams recorded a goal each.
