Former Tornado Jason Deitsch Completes Dream Season in United Hockey League
The dream season for former Texas Tornado forward Jason Deitsch is complete. Deitsch, who played for the Tornado during the 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons, recently won the United Hockey League Championship as a member of the Kalamazoo K-Wings (Michigan). The Wings won a thrilling Game Five in overtime of the Colonial Cup Finals. The K-Wings defeated the Danbury Trashers 4-1 in the best-of-seven series to earn their first UHL Colonial Cup Championship. However, the Championship for Deitsch was just the latest in a season in which the former Texas Tornado standout dominated the league as a rookie. Back on April 26, 2006, Deitsch was named as the Easton UHL Rookie of the Year by league head coaches, general managers, and members of the media. The native of Cincinnati, Ohio celebrated his 26th birthday last Friday. He led the Kalamazoo Wings in scoring with 87 points (38g, 49a). That total also led all UHL rookies and ranked tied for eighth overall in the league. His 38 goals were third among rookies and his 49 assists ranked tied for second. He played in 72 regular season games and registered a plus-36 rating which ranked third among UHL rookies. At one point, he earned an even or better rating in 20 straight games. His 18 power play goals were the most among rookies and tied for fourth overall in the league. Deitsch led the entire UHL with a .245 shooting percentage.
During one stretch of the season, he compiled a nine-game goal scoring streak which was the longest streak in the UHL in 2005-06. He also rode a 20-game point streak from January 28th to March 12th, racking up 36 points (17g, 19a) during the streak. Deitsch had at least one point in 36 of the final 39 games of the regular season. In his 72 games for Kalamazoo, he tallied 23 multi-point games and twice scored four points in a contest. Deitsch was also a member of the 2005-2006 UHL All-Rookie team. After leaving Texas, Deitsch attended St. Norbert College in Wisconsin, where is finished as the Knights career scoring leader. Deitsch, who played with SNC from 2001 to 2005, had 38 goals and 49 assists for 87 points in 72 games.
The Chronicles of Chuck... The Back-to-Back-to-Back North American Hockey League National Champion Texas Tornado proudly present, The Chronicles of Chuck! The Chronicles of Chuck is a day-by-day account of the Chuck Robertson Cup, as it spends yet another year in the friendly confines of Frisco, Texas. The Chuck Robertson Cup is awarded to the National playoff champion of the NAHL, and is the oldest junior hockey trophy in the United States. It is named for Chuck Robertson, a pioneer of junior hockey in the NAHL, and youth hockey in the state of Michigan. Chuck Robertson was the owner of the Paddock Pools Saints when they won a record seven straight NAHL championships from 1976-1983.
During the past seven seasons, the Texas Tornado has won the Chuck Robertson Cup four times, including the past three seasons (2004, 2005, and 2006). The Tornado became the first team since the 1986-88 Compuware Ambassadors to win three straight championships. Throughout the Summer of 2006 and into the 2006-07 hockey season, the Tornado will chronicle all of the places that "Chuck" will be at and the sights he will see. The cup has been recently engraved with the names of the 2005-06 Championship team, forever placing them as Champions of the NAHL.
