Toledo RHP Austin Calopietro Signs with Paints
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Chillicothe Paints, presented by Adena Health System, signed pitcher Austin Calopietro for the upcoming season, which begins May 30.
A Maumee, Ohio, native, Calopietro is a junior at the University of Toledo. This season, he is 2-0 with a 4.34 ERA and leads the Rockets with 19 appearances on the mound. Over 29 innings of relief work, Calopietro has 29 strikeouts.
The 6-foot-3, 204-pound, right-hander previously played the last two summer seasons for the Irish Hills Leprechauns in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, where he was named a GLSCL All-Star both years. Last summer, Calopietro made 11 relief appearances and allowed just four earned runs on 19 hits, walked 12 and struck out 26 over 23 1/3 innings. He also collected five saves.
Calopietro graduated from Maumee High School in 2016. He earned three varsity letters in baseball and basketball and one in football. He was twice selected first-team all-league and second-team all-district in baseball.
The third player to sign with the Paints from the University of Toledo, Calopietro joins pitcher Nate Haugh and infielder Trace Hatfield on this year's roster.
The 2019 Chillicothe Paints season begins Thursday, May 30, at VA Memorial Stadium against the Champion City Kings at 7:05 p.m. The Chillicothe Gazette presents FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA by 94 Country and draft beer will be just $1 for Thirsty Thursday. The Paints have made the playoffs seven times in the 10 seasons since joining the Prospect League as a charter member in 2009. The Paints regularly lead the Prospect League in attendance with an average of nearly 2,000 fans per game and are one of the most highly-attended collegiate wood-bat summer teams in the country.
