Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that Todd Wawrousek (WOR-e-SEK) has been named the new assistant coach of the Whitecaps men's team.

"Todd is a coach that I have held in high regard for many years," said Whitecaps men's head coach Bob Lilley. "I have coached with him and against him and I know he will bring a lot of value and experience to the club."

Wawrousek comes to the Whitecaps with over 25 years of coaching experience including five seasons as Bob Lilley's assistant coach with the Hershey Wildcats (1997-2001) and 17 years as the head coach of Gettysburg College women's team (1990-2006).

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of the Whitecaps organization and contribute to their rich tradition of excellence," said Wawrousek. "I look forward to guiding and developing talent within the club and am quite thankful for the opportunity. It is a privilege to return to the USL First Division and collaborate once again with Bob."

Consistently one of the most successful coaches in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Wawrousek has guided the Gettysburg Bullets to a 195-108-19 record, five Centennial Conference championships and six NCAA tournament appearances during his tenure. In 2006, he led the Bullets to their second consecutive Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Championships and posted the program's 15th winning season.

In 1993, 1994 and 1998 Wawrousek was named the regional Division III Woman's Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He was also named Mid Atlantic Conference's Coach of the Year in 1992.

Wawrousek launched his coaching career in 1980, when he served as an assistant soccer coach at Regis College (Weston, Massachusetts). He went on to coach at the University of Pittsburgh, Millersville University (Millersville, Pennsylvania), Alfred University (Alfred, New York) and Elizabethtown College (Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania) prior to joining Gettysburg.

In addition to his coaching duties at Gettysburg, the 48-year-old native of Reading, Pennsylvania has also worked with the U.S. Olympic development program for girls in eastern Pennsylvania (1990-1995), as a coach with the FC Delco in Downingtown, Pennsylvania (1993-1997 and 2001) and numerous soccer clinics in America.

Wawrousek holds a master's degree from Alfred University and is married with one daughter and one son.

The Whitecaps have been searching for a new men's assistant coach since Mike Toshack left the club last month to accept the goalkeeper coach position with the 2006 Major League Soccer champion Houston Dynamo.

Vancouver's regular season kicks off on Saturday, April 21 versus the Seattle Sounders. Whitecaps full season tickets start at just $199 and include all Whitecaps Men's and Women's regular season and playoff matches at Swangard, priority purchase rights for the proposed Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium and much more.
