Toby Uzo Ruled out for Season
September 16, 2021 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
FC Tucson News Release
FC Tucson announced Thursday that Tobenna "Toby" Uzo is out for the season following a knee injury suffered in the second half of last Saturday's win over Fort Lauderdale CF.
Uzo went down in the box in the 55th minute of Saturday's match.
"I knew right away something was wrong," said Uzo. "Unfortunately, after discussing with the doctors, it's not going to be possible to return this season. I'm grateful to God for this organization I've been blessed to be a part of. It's going to be hard not playing right now, but I will be supporting them however I can and I am committed to rehabilitating and getting back to playing. There is a lot of talent on FC Tucson and I will be rooting for my team to continue its incredible run."
The 26-year-old Nigerian forward signed on July 1. FC Tucson has gone 6-4-2 with Uzo, including a recent five-game unbeaten streak that has pushed the club into the thick of the USL League One playoff race.
"It's impossible to overstate Toby's impact on this team," said Jon Pearlman, FC Tucson vice president of soccer operations. "In addition to his presence on the field, Toby is a first-class person and a leader off the field and in the locker room. What he was able to bring to FC Tucson in the short time he was here is immeasurable. "We will continue to push for the postseason with the same effort he showed every match, and we will be there with him in his recovery."
Uzo was named to the USL League One Team of the Week after scoring a pair of goals in a 4-2 home win over New England Revolution II. The 6-foot-4 Uzo made 12 appearances and his presence in the box created defensive mismatches that opened up space for Tucson's other offensive weapons.
Uzo was credited with 11 chances created and he took 24 shots.
