Tigres heads into Copa Aztex after earning 3-2 victory in SuperLiga semifinals Wednesday
July 16, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Austin Aztex News Release
When Tigres UANL steps on to the field at Mike A. Myers Stadium to compete against Cruz Azul Saturday night, it will do so as one of the hottest teams in North America.
On Wednesday night Tigres defeated fellow Mexican side Santos Laguna 3-2 in Foxboro, Mass. and will now face the Chicago Fire on August 5 for a shot at winning the US$ 1 million prize in the finals of SuperLiga, a premier tournament that pits the best of the United States against the best of Mexico.
This will be the second meeting of the two teams in the tournament. Back on June 27 Tigres defeated the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park by a 2-1 margin. It was the second victory for Tigres in the eight-team tournament following a victory a week earlier against the MLS' Chivas USA squad. The only blemish for Tigres came in a 3-1 loss to San Luis.
While Tigres and its top form should bode well against Cruz Azul in the First Annual Copa Aztex in Austin on Saturday night, it should also provide a boost for the squad in the upcoming Apertura 2009 campaign, which begins for Tigres in one week on July 25 against Puebla.
WHAT: COPA AZTEX - Cruz Azul and Tigres
WHEN: Saturday, July 18 @ 7:00PM
