Minnesota Thunder News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. (Thursday, January 15, 2004) -- The Minnesota Thunder announced its 11th annual summer youth soccer camp program for boys and girls ages 5-18, directed by Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos and director of youth development Tim Carter.
Thunder camps are the most popular youth soccer camps in the state with more than 2,500 kids participating in 2003.
The camps will take place in 29 different metro-area locations, beginning in April and running throughout the summer months.
"Our popular day camps, residential camps and specialty camps provide a challenging and enjoyable experience for any level of player," said Carter. "We encourage everyone to sign up early and take advantage of the April 15 early-bird discount. Last year was a record year for our camps and we anticipate a number of these camps to fill up quickly."
The Thunder offer five different camps, including Day, Senior and Youth Residential, D1 College, Athletic Performance, and Striker-Goalkeeper. Multiple Day Camps are offered, designed for boys and girls ages 5-14, with groups divided by age, gender, and ability. The Kickers Day Camp is perfect for beginners, while the Advanced Camp offers advanced technical concepts. Thunder players re-emphasize fundamentals and introduce tactics such as speed of play, defending, possession, and combination play.
The exclusive three-day D1 College Camp, held in August, allows boys and girls age 15-18 the opportunity to gain instruction from the nation's top college coaches.
Camps are designed to offer individuals the best possible learning environment. Having a 13:1 camper to coach ratio, allows for extended one on one contact. The wide variety of camps offers something for every youth player, according to Carter.
The Minnesota homegrown staff includes players Dustin Branan (Lakeville), Amos Magee (St. Paul), Marshall Morehead (Stillwater), Joe Warren (Bloomington), Greg Wheaton (St. Paul) and other Thunder players.
Cost for the camps are $95 (All-Girls, Striker-Goalkeeper), $130 (Day Camp, half-day), $195 (Day Camp, full-day), $295 (Residential), and $350 (D1 College). Cost includes a Thunder T-shirt, Nike soccer ball, color photo, certificate of participation, Soccer USA discount ($25 off a $100 purchase), and Thunder game ticket. Players registering before April 15 will receive a $10 discount (limited to one discount per registration).
The Thunder camps, in existence since 1994, are an official camp of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. All Thunder coaches participate in a three-day training program conducted by the Nationally Accredited State Coaching Director. The training focuses on risk management and age appropriate activities.
