Minnesota Thunder News Release
BLAINE, Minn. (Friday, March 21, 2003) â The Minnesota Thunder announced today the re-signing of its all-time leading scorer Amos Magee to a one-year contract. Magee will serve as a player/assistant coach with the team.
Magee, a 31-year-old St. Paul native, who has scored 63 goals and 37 assists in eight pro seasons with the Thunder, will also play a lead role in the Thunder youth summer camps.
"I received some interesting offers, but nothing compared to staying in Minnesota and having a chance to win a championship as a player and coach," said Magee, who recently earned the country's highest coaching license, the USSF class âA.
Magee is one of the longest active members of the Thunder, as he began his pro career in 1992. Magee is a graduate of St. Paul Academy and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., where he majored in history. Prior to joining the Thunder, Magee helped the St. Paul Blackhawks to a 1990 McGuire Cup national championship.
"Amos is one of the greatest role models for soccer that Minnesota has ever seen," said Thunder general manager Jim Froslid. "His skill, spark and desire on the field coupled now with his âA' license will make us a more confident team.
The 5-8, 145-pound striker helped lead the Thunder to victory in the 1999 championship game where he notched two assists in a 2-1 win over the Rochester Raging Rhinos.
A long-time boy's varsity soccer assistant coach at St. Paul Academy, Magee will direct the Thunder's 2nd annual Striker-Goalkeeper camps held at the National Sports Center in Blaine April 21-24 and Aug. 4-7. The camps, designed for boys and girls ages 12-18, offers specific training for goal scorers and goalkeepers.
The Thunder now have three coaches that hold the prestigious "A" coaching license, Magee, head coach Buzz Lagos and newly acquired midfielder Kevin Anderson.
The Minnesota Thunder, founded in 1990, is a professional soccer franchise that plays in the Western Conference of the 19-team A-League. The Thunder's home schedule runs May through September at the National Sports Center in Blaine.
