Minnesota Thunder News Release
BLAINE, Minn. (Wednesday, May 7, 2003) â The Minnesota Thunder's 1-0 victory over Cincinnati inside the Metrodome May 4th marked the largest home opener crowd and ninth-largest A-League crowd in the 13-year history of the franchise.
Sunday's attendance of 5,893 surpassed the previous record of 4,290 set in 1998. May 4 also marked the earliest home opener played by the Thunder. With the exception of 2002, each home opener since 1999 has been dampened by rain showers.
"It was a great way to start our home schedule," said TJ Varecka, Thunder director of sales and Marketing. "The enthusiastic crowd was certainly a factor in the victory.
The Thunder (2-1-0) earned its fifth straight home opener victory, off forward Johnny Menyongar's goal in the 56th minute. The Thunder has outscored its opponents 13-0 in its last five home openers.
