Thunder Camp Staff to Take Part in Coaching Orientation Program

BLAINE, Minn. (Monday, May 19, 2003) – The Minnesota Thunder youth soccer camp program will conduct a three-day coaching orientation for its staff starting Tuesday, in preparation for the summer camp schedule which begins June 9.

The coaching sessions will be conducted by Minnesota Youth Soccer Association coaching director Ian Barker May 20-22 from 1-3 p.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The sessions will cover risk management, safety guidelines and age appropriate activities, and will follow USSF standards and procedures for coaching youth.

"MYSA has recognized the Thunder as our official camp provider," Barker said. "Part of the endeavor is making sure coaches are prepared to work with kids.

Along with MYSA, Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos, player/assistant coach Amos Magee and players Kevin Anderson and Marco Ferruzzi, all USSF A-Licensed coaches, will assist with the coaching orientation.

The Thunder's youth soccer camp staff of 50 coaches includes 20 Thunder players. Program Director John Menk anticipates enrollment to be more than 2,000 kids.

The Thunder is on a record setting pace for 2003 season ticket sales. With two weeks remaining to order before the Saturday, May 31 deadline, the team must sell 51 season tickets to surpass its 2002 record total of 888.

4. THUNDER LOOK FOR SIMILAR RESULTS IN REMATCH WITH MILWAUKEE MAY 24 AT THE NSC

The Thunder's next home game Saturday, May 24 (kickoff 7 p.m.) against the Milwaukee Wave United at the National Sports Center in Blaine will be a rematch of last Friday's 2-0 Thunder victory in Milwaukee. Thunder forward Marshall Morehead and defender Don Gramenz combined for both goals. The match will be just the third game of the season for Milwaukee and the first Thunder match at the NSC in 2003.
