Thunder add six
BOARDMAN, OH. - The Mahoning Valley Thunder, in conjunction with the arenafootball2 League Office, is pleased to announce the assignment of six players to the 2009 roster. Of the six players, all but one, Wide Receiver/Defensive Back Quorey Payne (5'9, 182) are rookies. Payne enters his third year of play in the af2, and his second with Mahoning Valley. In addition to Payne, Wide Receiver/Defensive Backs Jamar Landrom (6'2, 205), George Murray (6'2, 205), and George Shackleford (6'2, 190) will join Offensive/Defensive Lineman Larry Harrison (6'3, 310) and Jerrick Jeffreys (6'3, 308) on the 2009 roster.
Payne returns to Mahoning Valley after joining the club with four games remaining in the 2008 campaign. Quorey made an immediate impact, starting all four games after being acquired in late June. Payne finished the year with 23 receptions good for 359 yards and seven touchdowns. The Southern Illinois alum added five tackles and returned 10 kickoffs for an average of close to 21 yards per return. In his second game with the Thunder, Payne caught a 45 yard touchdown pass at Manchester on July 12th, which is tied for the longest touchdown reception in franchise history.
Rookie George Murray joins the black and blue following an impressive career at the University of Cincinnati. With the Bearcats Murray saw action as a Wide Receiver, Quarterback and Running Back. Competing in Conference USA, Murray hauled in 88 receptions for nearly 900 yards with two receiving touchdowns. Murray also accounted for five more scores by way of the ground, where he totaled nearly 400. The multi-dimensional Murray also threw for close to 200 yards and another touchdown.
Jamar Landrom was once rated the 12th best high school recruit in the entire state of Michigan, earning Landrom a scholarship to the University of Toledo. After two seasons with the Rockets, Landrom transferred to Tennessee State. As a senior, he led the Tigers with 91 tackles and four sacks. Following his collegiate career, Landrom spent time with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.
Rounding out the Wide Receiver/Defensive Back additions is George Shackleford. The University of Washington alum collected 119 receptions for 1,648 yards and 10 touchdowns during his career with the Huskies. Following college, Shackleford signed a free agent contract with the NFL's San Diego Chargers.
Entering the fold up front are Larry Harrison and Jerrick Jeffreys. Harrison projects as a Defensive Lineman which is where he lined up at Texas College. As a senior, Harrison recorded 19 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and forced two fumbles. Jeffreys is a former All CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) performer at Bowie State. The Largo, Maryland native played both Center and Guard as a member of the Bulldogs and also competed on the Track and Field team.
