Threshers Stunned by Flying Tigers, Fall 7-6

CLEARWATER, Fl - Despite holding a 6-4 lead in the ninth, the Clearwater Threshers fell 7-6 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in front of 6,438 on Saturday night at BayCare Ballpark.

Right-hander Jean Cabrera made his eighth start of the season on the mound for Clearwater, allowing no runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four in four innings of work.

The Threshers (2-6, 37-36) used a leadoff single from Nicolas Torres and a two-run home run by Leandro Pineda to open the scoring in the first. It was Pineda's first long ball of the season and the outfielder finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple and a homer.

Leading 2-0 in the fifth, the Threshers committed three errors as the Flying Tigers (5-2, 37-36) stormed back for three runs to grab a 3-2 lead. Lakeland added one more in the sixth on a solo homer by Manuel Sequera off lefty Jordan Fowler to make it 4-2.

After loading the bases in the seventh, the Threshers picked up an RBI single by Marcus Lee Sang and an RBI groundout from Erick Brito to rally back and tie the contest 4-4.

Right-hander Alex Garbrick worked a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, allowing only two hits and striking out three to keep the game tied 4-4 .

In the bottom of the eighth, Pineda drew a walk before Lee Sang launched a two out, two-run homer out to right to give the Threshers a 6-4 advantage. It was Lee Sang's seventh home run of the season.

Righty Konnor Ash entered in the ninth trying to preserve the victory, but walked three hitters and allowed a three-run home run to Eduardo Valencia to give the visitors a 7-6 lead.

The Threshers went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth against right-hander Williander Moreno, as the Flying Tigers secured their fourth win of the six-game series.

Clearwater will look to salvage the series finale on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. Left-hander Matt Osterberg (0-5, 4.15 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set for 6:20 p.m.
