NFLE National Football League Europa

Three Teams Fighting for Bowl Berth

June 3, 2003 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

Three teams fighting for second berth in World Bowl XI; Galaxy await opponents after reaching championship game in Scotland

AFTER nine exciting and competitive weeks, the World Bowl race will go down to the wire as three teams scrap it out in Week 10 to determine who will meet the Frankfurt Galaxy in the NFL Europe League championship game in Glasgow on Saturday June 14.

Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) may have already booked their flights to Scotland for World Bowl, but they will want to maintain their winning ways as they face the Berlin Thunder (2-7) on Saturday.

Two teams battling for the final World Bowl berth go head to head on the same day as the F.C. Barcelona Dragons (5-4) visit the Rhein Fire (5-4) at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The third World Bowl contender, the Scottish Claymores (5-4) faces the Amsterdam Admirals (4-5) at Glasgow's Hampden Park on Sunday.

All three contenders will have their eye on scores from around the league this week as none of them can reach World Bowl just with a victory – they all need to win and have a result from elsewhere go their way.

World Bowl race explained

The race for places in World Bowl XI at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on June 14 could go right down to the final game of Week 10.

With one week remaining, one team (Frankfurt Galaxy) has clinched a place in the championship game and three others remain in the hunt for the second berth.

Amazingly, none of the three chasing teams – F.C. Barcelona Dragons, Rhein Fire and Scottish Claymores - truly controls its own destiny. All three teams will need to rely on other results going their way even if they win their final game.

Here is a final reminder of the NFL Europe League's tiebreaker system.

NFLEL TIEBREAKER SYSTEM

If two or more clubs finish with identical won-lost-tied percentage, the following steps will be taken until a winner is determined:

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the tied clubs).

2. Best points differential in games between tied teams

3. Best points differential in all games

4. Best net touchdowns in games between tied teams

5. Best net touchdowns in all games

6. Coin toss

NOTE REGARDING MULTI-TEAM TIEBREAKERS: If, after completion of one of the above steps, clubs remain tied after third or other clubs have been eliminated from, or have won, a multi-team tiebreaker, the tiebreaker reverts to Step 1.

TEAM-BY-TEAM GUIDE TO WORLD BOWL RACE

AMSTERDAM ADMIRALS (4-5): Eliminated from World Bowl contention and still seeking first championship game appearance since 1995. Need to win final game to avoid matching longest streak of losing seasons in NFLEL history (5 - London/England Monarchs, 1992, 1995-98)

F.C. BARCELONA DRAGONS (5-4): Need to beat Rhein in Week 10 and then need Scotland to lose to Amsterdam.

BERLIN THUNDER (2-7): Eliminated from World Bowl contention, thus ending bid to become first team to qualify for three straight championship games. Need to win one more game to avoid posting worst record of a defending World Bowl champion (London, 2-7-1 in 1992).

FRANKFURT GALAXY (6-3): Qualified for World Bowl for record fifth time.

RHEIN FIRE (5-4): Need to beat Barcelona in Week 10 and then need Scotland to lose to Amsterdam OR Frankfurt to lose to Berlin.

SCOTTISH CLAYMORES (5-4): Need to beat Amsterdam and then need Frankfurt to win at Berlin OR Barcelona to win at Rhein.

Despite seeing his team qualify for a fifth World Bowl, Frankfurt Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER will not allow his players to take the foot off the pedal during their Week 10 visit to the Berlin Thunder.

Graber says: "This team is truly on a mission – we are not done yet. Getting to World Bowl has been a long time coming but this team is special. We will not be conserving energy this week."

GENE DAHLQUIST'S Scottish Claymores are one of three teams vying for the final World Bowl berth. The Claymores go into their Week 10 clash with the Amsterdam Admirals needing one of two results to go their way on Saturday.

The Claymores will then play on Sunday, knowing whether a fourth straight victory will be enough to earn a berth in the title game, being played a week later in their own stadium.

Dahlquist says: "The dream is still alive and we have a chance to go 6-4 against the Admirals next week. Then we'll see what happens.

"When I spoke to my players on the morning of our game with Barcelona last week I had goosebumps because it's fun to be in a situation like this where you need to win to keep your dream alive. I'm getting goosebumps talking about it right now – it's a thrill."

The other two World Bowl-chasing teams – Fire and Dragons – play each other in Week 10 and both are coming off heavy losses last week.

After seeing his team defeated 45-7 by the Claymores, Dragons head coach JACK BICKNELL said: "We got hammered. There are no answers to a performance like that. When we were 35-0 down at halftime, I didn't have an answer for that. You could have called Vince Lombardi and he wouldn't have had an answer either.

"But if we can play well, win next week and get in the World Bowl we'll deserve to be there with six wins. That could also give us our confidence back and we'll play well in World Bowl. We are very fragile right now but we will hang together as a group and see if we can get this turned around next week."

Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK saw his team lose 38-7 to the Galaxy in Frankfurt and will now be aiming for a Week 10 victory in the hope that either Frankfurt or Scotland loses its final game.

Kuharchek says: "We played exceptionally poorly last week. It was an important game and we did not get the job done. We still have a chance. If we had beaten Frankfurt we would have had control of our own destiny – now we have to hope for somebody else to win and we didn't want to get into that position."

The two teams already out of the World Bowl picture – Amsterdam Admirals and Berlin Thunder – have plenty to play for in Week 10 and could yet determine the final World Bowl qualifier.

Berlin plays host to Frankfurt on Saturday, while the Admirals visit the Claymores a day later.

Berlin Thunder head coach PETER VAAS says: "It was not meant to be our year but we have continued to fight and will do so in Week 10. When you win things go in your favour and they go against you when you lose."

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS states: "I think we have a group of players who don't give up. They come out and compete every week and that is the sign of a true professional."

Claymores' Couper reaches 100 career catches in style

AFTER heading to Spain last weekend with 99 career catches to his name, Scottish Claymores national wide receiver SCOTT COUPER became just the seventh player in NFLEL history to grab 100 passes (see table below) when he reeled in 2 receptions for 26 yards during Scotland's 45-7 demolition of the F.C. Barcelona Dragons.

And Couper reached the landmark in fine style as his 100th career reception came on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Shane Stafford.

Players to catch 100 passes in NFLEL history

252 Mario Bailey Fra 1995-2000

151 Demetrius Davis Bar 1991-1992

126 Judd Garrett Lon 1991-1992

124 Michael Titley Orl 1992, Lon 1995-97

114 Jason Shelley Fra/Ams 1997-2000

113 Yo Murphy Sco 1996-97, 1999

101 Scott Couper Sco 1995-01, 2003

After booking his place among the leading receivers in league history, Couper said: "It's a weight off my mind. I would have liked to have done it at home but it was great to reach that mark with a touchdown.

"It was one of the ugliest catches I have ever made. I got my arms, elbows and knees around the ball to make sure I caught it – I've not had one like that since my early playing days with the Glasgow Junior Lions.

"I've wanted to get my 100th catch and it is doubly sweet to do it in such an impressive victory."

Couper made his Claymores debut in 1995 and helped his native team win a World Bowl in 1996. After retiring at the conclusion of the 2001 season, Couper returned in 2003 and has caught 7 passes for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He holds all career receiving records for nationals with 101 catches for 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Scottish Claymores general manager STEVE LIVINGSTONE said: "It was wonderful to see Scott grab his 100th career catch against the Dragons in such an important game for us – and it was fitting that it was for a touchdown.

"Scott has done so much for the Claymores through the years and it is of great tribute to him that he has reached this significant benchmark in his career."

Graber determined to keep Galaxy rolling into Glasgow

DESPITE guiding his team to a record fifth World Bowl appearance, Frankfurt Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER is adamant his players and coaches will not be in a relaxed mood when they visit the Berlin Thunder in Week 10.

Graber has seen his 6-3 team hit top form over the past two weeks with big victories over the F.C. Barcelona Dragons and Rhein Fire. Another win in Week 10 will see the Galaxy roll into Glasgow for World Bowl XI on a tide of momentum.

The warning signs are there for the Galaxy. In the last three years, World Bowl has been lost by a team that qualified in Week 9 but was beaten in Week 10 heading into the championship game. In each of those years, World Bowl was won by a team that was victorious in Week 10.

Graber says: "We need a good week of practice and improvement. Two years ago, Barcelona was clearly the dominant team in the league and they clinched a World Bowl place early. In the last week, we beat them good and they didn't play well in the World Bowl and lost to Berlin.

"We want to finish as clear regular season champions. This week is an important game and we will not be conserving energy. It is a dangerous train of thought to think we can go up to Berlin and just play."

While he will be calling for 100 percent from his team on Saturday, Graber also insists his players will be performing at the highest possible level during practices this week.

"It is extremely important that you continue to get better every week," the third-year coach explained. "They say if you are not getting better, you are getting worse."

NFLEL quarterbacks display their skills in Week 9 action

THIRTEEN quarterbacks saw playing time in Week 9 and of that group, eight racked up passer ratings of 100 and above.

Leading the way was Scottish Claymores quarterback CRAIG NALL, who completed 14 of 16 passes for 207 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. His passer rating of 158.3 is the highest possible under the NFLEL and NFL passer rating system.

Here is a look at the eight quarterbacks to post ratings of 100 and above in Week 9

Night to remember for fans witnessing ArenA shootout

WHILE their Week 9 clash was meaningless in terms of the World Bowl race, the Amsterdam Admirals and Berlin Thunder showed plenty of offensive fireworks and determination, providing a memorable game for the 12,207 fans on hand at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Admirals emerged victorious by a 51-43 scoreline in the highest-scoring game in league history, breaking the record of 93 points set in Week 1 of this season by the Thunder and Scottish Claymores.

Here are some of the other memorable moments of note from the Admirals-Thunder clash:

· Both teams combine to score a league record 13 touchdowns, surpassing the record of 12 scored by the Scottish Claymores and Berlin Thunder in 2003 and the Barcelona Dragons and Thunder in 2001.

· Admirals wide receiver MATTHEW HATCHETTE scores on a league record 101-yard punt return, smashing the previous best of 97 set by Rhein's Larry Ryans vs. Berlin in 1999.

· Berlin Thunder running back DAVID ALLEN returns 5 kickoffs for a league single-game record of 206 yards (previous record was 202 yards by Berlin DB George Harris at Amsterdam in 1999).

· Allen breaks the single-season record for return yards with 915 on the year, eclipsing the previous best of 744 set by Frankfurt's Shawn Scales in 1999. Allen has a league record 1,848 all-purpose yards this season.

· Admirals Dutch kicker SILVIO DILIBERTO kicks 6 extra points to become the fifth player in NFLEL history to reach 250 career points, taking his tally to 252.

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS says: "If I have to coach in two of those a year I will be an old man before my time. That was a very entertaining game and must have been good to watch as a fan. From a coach's perspective, that was tough on the heart to say the least. I think we saw two teams playing pretty well on offense and struggling on defense."

NFLEL FACT: Offensive explosion

WEEK 9 was not a good week to be a defensive coordinator in NFL Europe. In the three games played, only two teams (F.C. Barcelona and Rhein) failed to score at least 38 points. The three games averaged 63.67 points and 709.3 yards of total offense per contest. A total of 191 points and 26 touchdowns were scored in Week 9 – the most of any single week this season.

NFLEL records being chased in final week of 2003 season

AS well determining the second participant in World Bowl XI, the Week 10 action could see some key league records fall.

Several players and teams will hope to reach landmarks in the final action of the regular season.

Here is a look at some of the records that could tumble during Week 10.

· Scottish Claymores need to score 39 points to break the league record of 310 points in a season set by the London Monarchs in 1991.

· Scottish Claymores need to rush for 243 yards to break the single season rushing record of 1,686 set by the Rhein Fire in 1999. The Claymores have rushed for more than 200 yards in three games this season.

· Berlin Thunder running back DAVID ALLEN needs 152 all-purpose yards in Week 10 to become the first player in league history to rack up 2,000 all-purpose yards. Allen currently holds the league record with 1,848 all-purpose yards this season.

· Scottish Claymores running back KEN SIMONTON needs 195 yards rushing and receiving to break the yards from scrimmage record set by Barcelona's Lawrence Phillips in 1999 (1,268).

The Berlin Thunder will attempt to avoid setting a couple of unwanted records when they face the World Bowl-bound Frankfurt Galaxy in Week 10.

Berlin has conceded 304 points this season and they will break the record of 311 allowed by the F.C. Barcelona Dragons in 2002 if Frankfurt scores 8 points or more.

The defending champion Thunder has also conceded 1,452 rushing yards this season. The most allowed in a single season is 1,544 by the Dragons last year, meaning Berlin will own the record if Frankfurt gains 93 yards on the ground.

NFLEL FACT: Out in front

WITH one week of the regular season remaining, Amsterdam Admirals wide receiver MATTHEW HATCHETTE is out on his own as the most productive wideout in NFL Europe. Having caught a club record 59 passes for 753 yards and 7 touchdowns, Hatchette has 21 more receptions than the next-best receiver in the league (Frankfurt's MARC LESTER), 168 more yards than second-ranked ROBERT BAKER, of Frankfurt, and more receiving touchdowns than any other player, with Lester and Baker ranking second with 6 scores apiece.

COACHES

DOUG GRABER is in his third season with the Galaxy and has guided the German club to its first World Bowl appearance since 1999. PETER VAAS is the reigning NFLEL Coach of the Year and winner of the last two World Bowls.

GAME NOTES

Galaxy have already clinched a record fifth appearance in World Bowl but will be keen to win in Berlin in order to match a franchise-best seven regular season victories set in 1998... If the Galaxy loses to their German rivals, it will mark the first time in league history that a season has ended with no team winning seven games... Galaxy will want to keep momentum going in Week 10 before they jet off to Glasgow. Frankfurt has won its last two games (at Barcelona and vs. Rhein) by a combined score of 85-20. Also, the team that has lost the last three World Bowls (Rhein in 2002, Barcelona in 2001 and Scotland in 2000) clinched a place in the final in Week 9 before losing in Week 10. Each time, they were beaten in the championship game by teams who had won in the final week of the regular season... Thunder need a victory to avoid posting the worst record of any defending champion (2-7-1 by the London Monarchs in 1992)... Berlin has endured a tough season in 2003 and if they concede more than 7 points against the Galaxy, they will break the league record for most points given up in a season (311 by the F.C. Barcelona Dragons in 2002). Berlin could also set another unwanted record because if the Galaxy rushes for 93 yards, the Thunder will have broken the mark for most rushing yards given up in a season (1,544 by F.C. Barcelona Dragons in 2002)... Following last week's defeat in Amsterdam, the Thunder have now been on the losing end of the three highest-scoring games in league history. They lost 51-43 to Amsterdam last week, 62-31 to the Scottish Claymores in Week 1 and 55-35 to the Barcelona Dragons in 2001... Thunder defense has given up 30 points or more in five of nine games this season, while the offense has committed 20 turnovers, coughed up 21 fumbles and allowed the quarterback to be sacked 35 times (all are league highs)... In spite of those offensive problems, Berlin have scored plenty of points, ranking third in the league with 221... Frankfurt boasts the league's top-ranked defense and a second-ranked offense with a knack for keeping drives alive at key times. Galaxy leads NFLEL in third down efficiency (50.0 percent) and average time of possession (33:16 per game)... In first meeting between teams this season, Galaxy opened a 35-0 first quarter lead and ran out 41-21 winners. RB JONAS LEWIS led the way with 137 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, while QB JAMES BROWN and LB IDRIS PRICE also found the end zone.

COACHES

JACK BICKNELL is in his eleventh season in charge of the Dragons and needs one more win for 60. Is looking to guide Dragons to a record fifth World Bowl appearance. PETE KUHARCHEK won World Bowl rings in 1998 and 2000 as defensive coordinator for the Fire and led team to the championship game as head coach last season, losing to Berlin in the final.

GAME NOTES

Both teams have a shot at reaching World Bowl XI in Glasgow if they win this encounter. Dragons need a victory coupled with a Scotland loss on Sunday, while the Fire needs to win on Saturday and hope either Frankfurt loses to Berlin or Scotland loses to the Amsterdam Admirals on Sunday... Dragons are reeling after back-to-back losses at home by a combined score of 92-20. Jack Bicknell's team started the year on course to break the league record for fewest points conceded in a season (121 by the London Monarchs in 1991). Dragons conceded 96 points in first seven games while going 5-2 but have conceded 92 in their last two defeats... Dragons will hope history is on their side as they have made their four previous World Bowl appearances in odd-numbered years: 1991, 1997, 1999 and 2001... Fire are also struggling to find the right form at the critical stage of the season, having lost two of their last three games and conceding more than 30 points in each of those losses... Fire had conceded 30 or more points just four times since 1995 before those two defeats at the hands of Scotland (Week 7) and Frankfurt (Week 9)... Rhein has already conceded 181 points this season with one game left to play – that is the most conceded by a Fire team in a single year since the 2000 squad allowed 209 points... Fire still rank as one of the most dangerous defensive units in the league, leading the way with 28 sacks and 3 touchdowns on returns and fumble recoveries. Defense ranks second in NFLEL... Rhein ranks fifth in the league in turnovers with a ratio of –4 (14 takeaways to 18 giveaways) and the Fire offense has fumbled 20 times (second-most in NFLEL)... Dragons rank first in turnovers with a +7 ratio (15 takeaways to 8 giveaways). Dragons also boast the best kickoff cover unit in the league, allowing opponents just 17.4 yards per return... Last game between the two teams was a low-scoring affair as Dragons WR SEAN MOREY scored the only touchdown in an 11-3 victory when he caught a 5-yard pass from QB SETH BURFORD. LB DWAYNE LEVELS earned NFLEL Defensive Player of the Week honours for his performance against the Fire after he recorded 9 tackles, an interception and knocked down 3 passes.

COACHES

GENE DAHLQUIST is in his third season with the Claymores and is aiming to reach his first World Bowl. Has won the last three meetings against the Admirals. BART ANDRUS is coming to the end of his third year in charge of the Admirals and needs a win to avoid a third losing season under his guidance.

GAME NOTES

When Claymores kick off their season finale against the Admirals they will know their World Bowl status. If either Barcelona or Frankfurt wins on Saturday, the Claymores can book a World Bowl berth with victory over the Admirals. If Rhein and Berlin are victorious on Saturday, the Claymores are out, regardless of how they fare in the final game of the regular season... Claymores go into meeting with the Admirals as the hottest team in the league, having won their past three games by a combined score of 109-27... The Claymores need to score 39 points against the Admirals to break the league record for most points in a season (310 by the London Monarchs in 1991). Claymores also need 243 rushing yards vs. Admirals to break the single-season rushing record (1,686 by Rhein in 1999). Scotland has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game on three occasions this season... Claymores resurgence has coincided with defensive improvements that have seen unit rise to third in the rankings and lead the league in sacks (28) and red zone defense (see table right)... Claymores have the league's top-ranked offense and have scored a league-high 35 touchdowns this season... Used 11 different receivers in last week's defeat of the Dragons... Admirals need a victory to avoid a record-tying fifth consecutive losing season (London Monarchs 1992 & 1995-98)... Amsterdam remains the only team never to have won a World Bowl with their only appearance coming in 1995 when they lost at home to the Frankfurt Galaxy... While the Admirals have the league's worst-ranked running attack (80.5 yards per game), they boast NFL Europe's most potent passing offense (277.8 yards per game)... Three of the four leading receivers in the league in receptions are Admirals and Dutch club also boasts top-ranked red zone offense (see table right)... In first meeting between the teams this year CRAIG NALL and SHAUN HILL became the first quarterbacks to throw for 300 yards in the same game since the 1996 season. FB MIKE MALAN scored twice for the Claymores as they emerged victorious in the Amsterdam ArenA.
