Hamilton Nationals News Release

TORONTO - Toronto Nationals players Merrick Thomson and Doc Schneider have been named Major League Lacrosse's Offensive Player of the Week and Cascade Rookie of the Week respectively. The pair were instrumental in the Nationals 18-17 overtime victory at home against the Boston Cannons on Thursday, July 27. In their inaugural season, the Toronto Nationals are the second team to clinch a playoff spot at the 2009 MLL Championship Weekend.

Merrick Thomson receives his second league nod this week, being named Offensive Player of the Week for his eight point performance last Thursday. Thomson scored five goals and assisted on three others in the overtime come-from-behind win. For his outstanding play in such a crucial game, Thomson was named BudLight game MVP for the third time this season. Thomson was the first player to be recognized as Offensive Player of the Week for the 2009 season back on May 15 after he scored seven goals in Toronto's first-ever game against the Washington Bayhawks. The Hamilton, ON native currently leads MLL in goals with 40. If he can score three goals or more in Toronto's final regular season game he will beat his personal best of 42 goals in a season set last year, good for tenth all-time in MLL history.

Toronto Nationals goalie Doc Schneider is this week's top rookie after making Nationals history. Schneider became the first goalie to play an entire game for Toronto, standing strong between the pipes for the Nationals stopping 24 of 39 shots on goal, including two in sudden death overtime. After 62:57 in net, Schneider recorded his first professional career win. This is also Schneider's second honour this season, his first coming after his MLL debut on Saturday, June 13 where he stopped 11 of the Washington Bayhawks' 15 attempts on net.

Major League Lacrosse also announced Mike Gabel from the Chicago Machine as the Defensive Player of the Week.

The Toronto Nationals play their final game of the 2009 regular season on Saturday, August 8 versus the first place Denver Outlaws. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. ET at BMO Field. Both Toronto and Denver have clinched spots at the 2009 New Balance Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend on August 22-23 at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD.
