Things Come In Twos

April 25, 2007 - World Indoor Football League 2 (WIFL 2) News Release

Good things -- or bad things depending on what side you are on - are happening in pairs in the World Indoor Football League this season.

Two weeks ago, the Columbus Lions thought they had posted the largest margin of victory of the season when they defeated the Augusta Spartans 69-30. But while the Lions were celebrating, the final from Osceola-Daytona Beach was also a 39-point margin - a 62-23 Ghostriders victory.

So when the Spartans defense held the Lions to a season-low 19 points of Friday, was it a given that the Ghostriders would match that when they downed the Thunder 40-19 on Sunday?

Just like Yogi Berra said - déjà vu all over again.

MILESTONE: Daytona Beach Thunder wide receiver and arena football legend Barry Wagner registered the 1,000 regular-season reception of his professional career Sunday in the first quarter of the Thunder's game with the Ghostriders.

Wagner was the AFL's all-time regular season leader in receptions (991) and yardage (13,363) during his 14-year career. He has 10 receptions for 143 yards and 3 TDs for the Thunder this season.

Other receivers with 1,000 career catches: Jerry Rice (1,549), Cris Carter (1,101), Tim Brown (1,094) and Marvin Harrison (1,022) in the National Football League and Terry Vaughn (1,006) in the Canadian Football League.

NO GOOD NEWS FOR GOODMAN: Columbus running back/kick returner Eugene Goodman was held to minus-one yard rushing and 20 all-purpose yards in his team's loss to Augusta. He was able to maintain his status as the league's rushing leader - barely: Osceola's Terrance Bunting now trails Goodman by just three yards, 255-252. However, Augusta's Marvin Stone (1,073) and Osceola's Lamont Finnie (926) overtook Goodman (919) for the all-purpose yardage lead.

OUR HOUSE: The WIFL is the toughest road trip in all of arena/indoor football. The home team has won 71.4 percent of games played so far in the WIFL. The af2 has the second-best home-winning percentage at 65.3, followed by the American Indoor Football Association (62.5) and the Arena Football League (62.0). Trailing are the Continental Indoor Football League (59.3) and United Indoor Football (52.0). Road teams in the Intense Football League have won four of the first seven games in that just-started season.

KICKS AND THAT: Augusta's Shon Rowser notched his 5th UNO of the season Friday, all at home and all going from the north to south end zone ... Osceola's William Nicoloso had his second two field goal game of the season Sunday, but also missed three ... The Ghostriders have only given up six sacks this season.
