Metropolitan Riveters News Release
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the National Women's Hockey League has announced that Season 6 will be played in bubble format based in Lake Placid, New York from January 22nd to February 5th, 2021.
After consulting with league health officials, players and staff, the NWHL has made the decision to shorten its sixth season, taking the action to a single host location capable of housing its six member clubs, 180 players and 50+ staff. With this new format, we promise fast-paced, heart-pounding, hotly tested competition in a historic location, as Lake Placid hosted both the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games including the United States "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and subsequent gold medal finale over Finland some four decades ago.
The teams will arrive separately in Lake Placid in a staggered schedule on Jan. 21st and 22nd. Beginning Jan. 23rd, they will each play five games (one against each team in the league),
followed by a playoff round that will determine the four teams advancing to the Isobel Cup Semifinals. The single-game Semifinals will feature the top-seeded team against the fourth-
place team, with the teams ranked second and third facing each other. The winners of the Semifinals will advance to the Isobel Cup Final on Friday, Feb. 5.
"This season offers the unique opportunity for our players to come together and focus on hockey for 15 days," said Riveters general manager Kate Whitman Annis. "Our goal is to bring the Isobel Cup back to New Jersey and I can think of no better place to do that than Lake Placid with its rich history of hockey underdogs prevailing in the fight of their lives."
Nestled in the Adirondack mountains of upstate New York, Lake Placid boasts some of the most beautiful scenes in the country, and is famous for its 70 and 90 meter ski jumps, bobsled experience and offering the highest vertical drop for skiers on the East Coast. The town also hosts one of the primary U.S. Olympic Training Centers, where athletes from many winter sports both live and train on a daily basis.
Whether they spend vacations in the Empire State, attended high school there or even got married at Whiteface Lodge, Riveters players and staff aren't strangers to Lake Placid.
"Lake Placid is my favorite place in the world (largely due to all the hockey time there), so much so that I got married there." Assistant captain Kiira Dosdall-Arena said "And I obviously had a bride vs groom hockey game the day before our wedding."
Rebecca "Moose" Morse graduated from the National Sports Academy citing that experience as one of the best she's ever had. "Lake Placid is my favorite place on Earth." said the Riveters Assistant Captain. "I spent four of my most formative years there, attending National Sports Academy and playing on the girls hockey team. I have countless memories from my time living in the beautiful, historic village. One of the fondest was when I saw a real moose for the first time. You know I had to capture the moment and get a picture with it!"
"Lake Placid is my home away from home," says Riveters Assistant Captain Cailey Hutchison who attended the Northwood School for 4 years. "The 1980 rink was my home rink. I'm so excited to go back to my favorite place. Lake placid is where I found myself as a person and player and it's amazing that I get to go back and play there as a professional athlete."
Both Riveters and NWHL fans won't be left out of the experience. All games will continue to be streamed LIVE on Twitch. In addition to the games, the Riveters All-Access Pass will provide personal fan experiences featuring unique interaction with players, game watching parties and even a piece of the net when the Riveters win the Isobel Cup!
