Over the weekend the 2nd place Jamestown Rebels hosted the 4th place Northeast Generals for the second time this season. These two Eat Division teams have not played against one another since Nov. 9th-10th. During that weekend the Rebels wore specialty military jerseys, this past weekend they dawned breast cancer awareness jerseys. With playoffs right around the corner both teams are looking to go into the post-season with a lot of momentum.
On Friday, the Generals came out firing on all cylinders as they were able to score 1:45 into the 1st period. With less than eight minutes left in the period they added to their total, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play. While the Rebels put up double-digit shots in the middle frame none were able to beat David Fessenden. On the other side of the ice though the Generals put up eight shots on Noah West for the second straight period. Two of their eight shots beat West, with the last one going in with :18 seconds left in the 2nd period. This now put the Rebels deficit at four when the 3rd period started. In the final period of regulation, Hunter Johannes was able to finally erase the goose egg on the scoreboard. Minutes later, Jackson Wille and Brady Gaudette dropped the gloves. Wille was looking to spark something in his team in hopes that they would be able to tie it. Sadly, that would not be the case as the clock hit zero and the score read 4-1 Generals. That was the Rebels second-straight loss to Northeast and their first three-goal loss since game two of their home opening weekend when they lost 6-3 to New Jersey.
The following night was a different Rebels squad than the one that left the ice less than 24 hours ago. Once again David Fessenden was between the pipes for the Generals. As for the Rebels they went with the best goalie in the league, Ryan Keane. The energy from top to bottom for the Rebels was completely different, they were being more aggressive and making high quality passes. They put up 11 shots on Fessenden after the first 20 minutes, but nothing was able to get past him. In the middle period the Rebels put up 14 shots and still no answer. When the 3rd period started there was still no goals put up on the board. Although with 4:15 left to go in regulation someone was finally able to put the frozen rubber in the back of the net, but it was not in favor of the good guys. With less than three minutes left in regulation we had ourselves another fight, this time though it was between Niki Jasko and Ryan Rowland. While that sure did get the crowd on their feet, the Rebels were in jeopardy of being swept by the Generals for the first time this season. With Keane pulled and the extra attacker out for the Rebels they tried everything they could to tie it up and force overtime. Unfortunately, they were not able to score giving the Generals their first sweep over the Rebels.
That was Fessenden's first shutout of the season. It was also the first time the Rebels had been shutout since their 9-0 loss to Amarillo on Sep. 21st. The Rebels want to get far away from February as possible, as it was not kind to them having been swept the first and last set of games for this month. This weekend they travel to Odenton, MD to face the 6th place Maryland Black bears. They have six-straight wins over the newest team in the NAHL, all coming at the Northwest Arena. The last time they visited Maryland was nearly four months ago which resulted in a win and an overtime loss. If any weekend can get the Rebels back to their winning ways it will be this weekend as they have not lost in regulation to the Black Bears and they lead the season series 8-0-1-1.
