Frisco Thunder News Release
In a game that seemed to hold as many fireworks as a July 4th night, the Frisco Thunder and the Katy Rough Riders battled for four quarters before a clear winner would emerge. The contest took all sixty minutes and a last second field goal before Katy would walk off EDS Field as the victors. "This is one of the most amazing games I have ever been apart of. I certainly wish the outcome would have been different but I really think that our fans got a taste of what the IFL and Frisco Thunder football is all about," stated head coach Jon Loudermilk after his disappointing loss.
Although the Thunder came up just short, there was plenty for the fans to cheer about. The unstoppable combination of quarterback Dustin Almond and wide receiver Antwon Courington may be new to fans in these parts, but the #9 and #11 duo have been dominating the gridiron together for five years now. Both attended the University of Southern Mississippi where they dominated Conference USA winning two conference championships and four strait bowl games. Saturday night the duo connected for five more touchdowns and over 200 yards.
Despite the dominating performance on offense, the game went back and forth all night with Katy taking advantage of four Frisco turnovers. With one minute remaining in the game, the Thunder looked to have things under somewhat control, but the explosive Katy offense still had the ball. After a short drive down to the 12 yard line, Katy took a shot at the goal line only to be intercepted by Frisco's Blake Farris and returned almost to midfield. With only a two point lead, and now possession of the ball, the game looked to finally be under control for the Thunder. Hold on a minute now fans!! If you have ever been to an IFL game you know the game is never over until the clock reads all 0's. With two timeouts remaining for Katy, the Thunder was forced to make some first downs. After a completion from Almond to Moses Harris, the ball appeared to be stripped from the arms of Harris as he was going down to the turf. The football seemed to roll around for hours before Darvin Peterson of the Rough Riders pounced on it to give them the last possession. Four plays later and with only .04 seconds on the clock, Katy's Darren Brown kicked a 19 yard field goal as time expired to give Katy the 60-59 win.
The Frisco Thunder, now 8-4, are still holding on to third place behind Louisiana and Corpus Christi. Following their upcoming off week, the Thunder will be back at the DR. Pepper Star Center on July 21 for their final home game vs. the Corpus Christi Hammerheads. One lucky fan will have the opportunity to make a kick at halftime worth $100,000.00 courtesy of EDS Credit Union. Make sure to come out and support the Frisco Thunder as they head for the 2007 playoff and for your chance to kick for $100,000.00!
