San Diego Seals News Release

The Captain is back! The San Diego Seals announced today that the team has agreed to terms with Captain and future Hall of Famer Brodie Merrill on a one-year deal.

"Brodie is our captain and is still considered one of the best defenders and leaders in the NLL," said General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill. "He's never been hungrier to accomplish what he came to San Diego to do - win a championship. He loves this team and the city, and wants to finish his Hall of Fame career in San Diego on a high note."

Brodie Merrill, a 15-year NLL veteran and younger brother of General Manager and Head Coach Patrick Merrill, has appeared in 28 games for San Diego, recording 26 points, 216 loose balls and 32 caused turnovers. On February 22, 2020, Brodie Merrill scooped up his 2,518th loose ball to become the NLL's all-time leader. The future Hall of Famer was named the first captain in Seals history ahead of the team's inaugural season.

"It's been a special experience playing for the Seals on many levels and I'm thankful for the opportunity to play another year," said Brodie Merrill. "The team is really well-positioned for both the short and long term, and I feel fortunate to be part of it."

Brodie Merrill is one of the most decorated lacrosse players in the world. His accomplishments include:

2006 NLL Rookie of the Year

2006 NLL Defensive Player of the Year

League record three-time NLL Transition Player of the Year

Nine-time NLL All-Pro selection

Four-time Gold Medalist with Team Canada at the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship

Two-time Gold Medalist with Team Canada at the FIL World Field Lacrosse Championship

Two-time Silver Medalist with Team Canada at the FIL World Field Lacrosse Championship

Previously named the best player in the world by Inside Lacrosse, a leading industry publication

The Orangeville, Ontario native was drafted first overall in the 2005 NLL Entry Draft, three years after brother, Patrick, was picked first as well. Brodie Merrill, a graduate of Georgetown University, was a two-time First Team All-American, two-time Tewaaraton Award Finalist and the 2005 NCAA Defensive Player of the Year.
