Tornado Haunt Spirit with Weekend Sweep - With two more home wins over the Wasilla Spirit this past weekend in Frisco, the Texas Tornado maintained their five-point lead over the Texarkana Bandits atop of the NAHL South Division. Friday night was a workmanlike performance for the Texas Tornado, as they cruised to a 4-1 win over the Wasilla Spirit for their 28th win of the year. The 1st period was all Tornado as they outshot the Spirit 17-5, but the Spirit maintained a scoreless tie thanks to goaltender Andrew Volkening. The 2nd period was all Tornado as they unleashed more offense. First, #18 Tom Train rocketed a one-timer past Volkening on a 5 on 3 power play. #5 Brett Blatchford and #3 Lyon Messier assisted on the play. #11 Ryan Fuller made it 2-0 on another power play goal as he was denied the first shot, but stuck with the rebound to put it past Volkening with assists from #19 Andrew Harrison and #12 Colin Long. The Tornado scored their first even strength goal as #24 Billy Skwarczewski got around the defense and put one over the blocker side of Volkening with assists from linemates #16 Adam Flink and #13 Sean McCauley. The Tornado and goaltender #33 Troy Redmann would lose the shutout in the 3rd after a Wasilla power play goal, but #28 Karl Sellan sealed the game with an empty-net goal. The Tornado used a two-goal 3rd period to sweep the Wasilla Spirit on Saturday night, 3-2. The Tornado jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as #28 Karl Sellan redirected a great pass from #26 Derek Danowski for his 26th goal of the season. Despite the Tornado lead at the end of the 1st period, the Spirit would climb back in the 2nd period. Mike Glaesmer raced in on a breakaway and beat Tornado goaltender #20 Matt DiGirolamo through the legs. Then the Spirit went on the power play and Andy Sternberg roofed a shot off the crossbar and in over DiGirolamo's left shoulder for a 2-1 Spirit lead after two periods. The Tornado used the fresh ice early in the 3rd period to their advantage as #18 Tom Train smashed home a rebound drive from #5 Brett Blatchford and another assist from Danowski. Then with a little over twelve minutes remaining #15 Sean Roadhouse's hustle to the net paid off as he tapped home a rebound drive from linemate #17 Jordan Mowbray for a 3-2 lead. Defenseman #2 Mike Olmstead also assisted on the play. The Tornado killed off a 6 on 4 the final 1:32 of the game, which included several saves from DiGirolamo, for their 29th win of the season.
