Texas steals series opener with 2-0 win over Sunbirds
Stockton, Calif. The California Sunbirds lost the first game of their three game homestand against the visiting Texas Thunder, 2-0, on Tuesday, July 27. The loss drops the Birds to 12-29 on the season while the Thunder improve to 25-11
Despite getting another strong outing from their superarm, Jodie Cox, the Sunbirds were unable to dent the plate on a night in which they were able to get runners on base against the leagues top pitcher, Christa Williams. The Birds threatened early in the first getting a runner into scoring position, but their real threat came in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with two out. After getting two outs, the Birds got some help starting the inning as they reached base on an error by the Thunder second basemen that should have ended the inning. Two batters later, Texas got out of the inning with a strikeout but failed to end the threat as the third strike was dropped and Christen Bedwell reached first. However, the threat was ended as Cox went down on strikes to end the game.
Texas, who are tied for first in the league, struggled to get the ball out of the infield for most of the night, only reaching the outfield grass on ground balls through the hole. Even though they lacked solid hitting, the Thunder was able to scratch out two runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a small lapse in control from Cox. After loading the bases, the Thunder used to infield fielders choices to score their only runs of the game.
Cox picked up her 18th loss of the season, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five. Her counterpart, Williams, picked up her league leading 10th win of the season as she gave up no runs two hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Sunbirds continue their three game homestand against the Thunder tomorrow, Wednesday, July 28. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 pm.
