Teams set for Robertson Cup

April 28, 2010 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release

The five-team field is now set for the Robertson Cup Tournament next week in Wenatchee, WA. The winner of the tournament will be crowned as the 2009-2010 NAHL Champion.

Representing the North Division, the Traverse City North Stars ride an eight-game winning streak into the Tournament. They won their last two regular season games, and swept the Janesville Jets and Motor City Metal Jackets in their run through the playoffs. Former Wildcats' forward Tim Opie has been among the North Stars' leading scorers in the playoffs, tallying three goals and four assists for seven points, currently third on the team. The North Stars also feature former Wildcats' forwards Nick Shkreli and Ryan Amin, as well as defenseman Curtis Heinz. This is the North Stars' first appearance at the Robertson Cup.

The Bismarck Bobcats spent most of the season atop the NAHL's Central Division, and swept Albert Lea and Owatonna on their way to the Robertson Cup. They have won ten games in a row, with their last loss coming back on March 13 against Owatonna. Former Wildcats' forward Sean McKenzie is fifth on the Bobcats in playoff scoring, with 8 points coming via three goals and five assists. Two other former Wildcats are with the Bobcats as well: forward Aaron Quick and defenseman Matt Shost. Bismarck's last appearance at the Robertson Cup was 2005 when they were the host team and placed fourth/

The St. Louis Bandits will bake their fourth trip in a row to the Robertson Cup Tournament, representing the South Division. The Bandits took both of their playoff series to five games, but prevailed over both the Texas Tornado and Topeka Roadrunners. Defenseman Patrick Sheehan, twin brother of the Wildcats' Brian Sheehan, has tallied a team-leading nine assists in the Bandits' 10 playoff games so far. St. Louis has won each of the last three Robertson Cup Championships.

The West Division will get two teams representing it this year. The Wenatchee Wild gained an automatic berth as tournament host, but also won the West Division. Representing the West Division with the Wild will be the runner-up Fairbanks Ice Dogs. Despite being in only their second year in the league, this will be the Wild's second appearance at the Robertson Cup. Last year they were the runner-up team, losing the final game to St. Louis in overtime. Wenatchee comes in riding a nine-game winning streak. Fairbanks will be making their first Robertson Cup appearance since 2007, the year they hosted the Tournament and finished fourth.

The last team to host and win the Robertson Cup in the same season was St. Louis in 2008, a feat the Wenatchee Wild hope to duplicate this season. The puck drops on Tuesday, May 4 at 2 pm Pacific Time as the Bismarck Bobcats face the St. Louis Bandits. A complete game schedule can be found at NAHL.com.

Good luck to all the players and teams involved!
