Team USHL rallies for Prospects / All-Star win
Published on February 3, 2004 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release
(LINCOLN, NEB.) â Sioux Falls Stampede wing Jim McKenzie scored two goals including the overtime game-winner to give Team USHL a 4-3 triumph at the 2004 USHL Prospects / All-Star Game on Tuesday night.
McKenzie's second tally of the evening capped a furious Team USHL rally from a 3-0 third-period deficit and gave the all-American squad its fifth straight Prospects /All-Star victory.
"Even when we were down 3-0, we honestly felt like we had pretty decent control of the game, but their goalies were standing on their heads," said McKenzie, a Woodbury, Minn., native. "The coaches said that as soon as we got the first one, they'd come in bunches and they were right."
McKenzie, who was selected as the game's Most Valuable Player, scored the first one and the last one for Team USHL, with goals from River City's Brett Motherwell and Danville's Bryan Marshall in between. Marshall's goal came with just 36 seconds left and sent the game into overtime.
In the extra session, Lincoln's Phillippe Lamoureux turned aside an Alex Foster breakaway before McKenzie worked his magic.
"I was at the end of my shift so I was really tired," McKenzie said. "But I saw a turnover and the possibility for a two-on-one so I just skated as hard as I could and Bill Thomas slid a great pass across to me."
McKenzie slipped the puck by Sioux City's Jimmy Spratt on the short side and gave Lincoln's Lamoureux the come-from-behind win in goal, much to the delight of the hometown fans.
Game Notes â A near-sellout crowd of 4,280 turned out for the game... Cedar Rapids goaltender Joe Fallon turned aside all 15 shots faced... Sioux City's Blair Yaworski notched a pair of assists and was named Team World Player of the Game. River City's Paul Stastny was named Team USHL Player of the Game.
