Tarpons Sign Defensive Back Whitley

ESTERO, FL - The Florida Tarpons (5-0) professional football team are still making roster moves and excited to announce the signing of Defensive Back and Kick Returner E.J. Whitley.

Whitley signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League in 2008 and played in 6 games. Upon being released, he signed in the Arena Football League with the Albany Firebirds. In only six games, E.J. Had 5 interceptions, also returned an interception for a touch day, had 28 tacks, 5 pass break ups, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries.

In College E.J. Played for three schools;

Whitley an Austin, TX native played one season for Victor Valley Junior College in Victorville, CA where he was a JC All-American, playing both ways. He also ran track and holds the school record in the 100 meters at 10.33. E.J. Had a team high 5 interceptions one going 27 yards for a score, 9 PBU's, 42 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles. While on offense playing wide receiver he caught 17 passes and hauled in 4 touchdowns.

He then became a mid-year JC transfer who signed early and went through spring practice with the UNVL Rebels. After his sophomore season he transferred to Abilene Christian University.

At Abilene Christian University E.J. Was a 2nd team All-American, All-Region player that did not give up a TD his entire collegiate career, only giving up a total of 5 catches his senior season. He also led his team and conference in interceptions with eight interceptions, 58 tackles, and 7 PBU's, 3 block kicks, and was a very effective punt and kickoff return specialist.
