Published on May 7, 2003 under National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
SUGABABES, one of the hottest bands on the UK and European music scene, are to headline the halftime show at World Bowl XI on Saturday, June 14 at Glasgow's Hampden Park.
The NFLEL announced today that the best-selling and critically-acclaimed band will take a break from recording their third album to perform at the finale of the 2003 season, to be broadcast in more than 100 countries around the world.
NFL Europe Managing Director JIM CONNELLY said: "We are looking forward to presenting such a major act as part of our World Bowl entertainment package. Sugababes are one of the most popular and successful bands around and to have them performing at halftime is an exciting development for fans buying tickets for the event. Their involvement continues the tradition of top-class entertainment that has been established around World Bowl."
Sugababes were formed in 1998 and released their first album, One Touch, in 2000. They were nominated in three categories in the prestigious Brit Awards in 2003 - Best British Group, Best British Album for Angels With Dirty Faces and Best British Dance Act.
The much-acclaimed Angels With Dirty Faces has spent several months in the top 40 of the UK album charts since being released in August 2002 and features the hit singles, Freak Like Me, Round Round, Stronger and Shape.
Looking forward to Sugababes' Hampden Park appearance, band member HEIDI RANGE said: "We're delighted to be headlining the World Bowl XI half-time show, especially as it's taking place in Glasgow. Scottish audiences are among the most enthusiastic in the world."
World Bowl XI will reach more than 200 million television viewers worldwide, including a live audience watching in the United States on FOX. KEISHA BUCHANAN said: "I hope fans in Europe, the United States and across the world enjoy watching from home on television - it's going to be a great day."
MUTYA BUENA added: "We know World Bowl XI is going to be one of the biggest sporting events in Europe in June and we're happy to be a part of it."
The appearance by Sugababes follows recent World Bowl performances by other major bands, including FIVE (World Bowl 2000 in Frankfurt), COOLIO (World Bowl IX in Amsterdam) and FAITHLESS and STATUS QUO (World Bowl X in Düsseldorf).
The World Bowl XI entertainment programme will also include a pre-game tribute to the best of Scottish entertainment, featuring Scottish rock star FISH, formerly of Marillion. Fish will team up with a full orchestra and a 100-strong pipe band for a special version of the Frankie Miller hit Caledonia.
Scottish Claymores general manager STEVE LIVINGSTONE said: "World Bowl XI will be a spectacular event featuring exciting entertainment. By attracting arguably the UK's biggest current pop act, it gives everyone an idea of how big this event will be in Glasgow in the week building up to the final and on the day itself."
