Edmonton Prospects News Release
Edmonton, Alberta - WMBL President Kevin Kvame welcomed Edmonton Prospects and Fort McMurray Giants' fans to the Edmonton Ballpark Saturday night for the Prospects and Giants co-home opener.
It was predicted to be the largest ever WMBL season opening crowd. With 4,720 fans there to watch the opening pitch, most of which were still there after a near 90 minute rain delay. Most of the rain had dried by the time the game ended past the midnight hour with the scoreboard reading Edmonton 16 Fort McMurray 3.
Regardless of the score though, this is a special year for both the Prospects and the Giants, who are sharing a stadium as co-home teams at the Ballpark in downtown Edmonton. Given the situation up north in Fort McMurray, it's fitting that these Giants vs. Prospects games will be referred to as the Alberta Strong series.
Arizona native and newbie to the team, Kody Funderburk said "it's pretty cool as an outsider to see the community come together and help. We've got [evacuees] staying over where we are, and it's just good to see everyone holding out." As someone who is unfamiliar with Alberta (and it's rivalries), he was struck by how these two teams are dealing with the unfortunate events taking place in Fort McMurray, "it shows how tight knit and community-oriented Edmonton and Fort Mac [are]." Funderburk also had a great first outing with the Edmonton Prospects, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs to boot. "I was seeing the ball well," he added.
The Edmonton Prospects play at home again next week on June 7th against the Brooks Bombers.
