Bellingham Slam News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam used a strong second half and a solid game from center Blake Poole as they defeated the Portland Chinooks, 112-100, in International Basketball League action at Whatcom Pavilion on Friday.

Like last weekend's home opener, the Slam started off sluggish and allowed Portland to take early control of the game. Bellingham found themselves down by five in the closing stages of the second quarter, but scored the final seven points in the half to take a 50-48 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was mostly a back-and-forth affair before the Slam manufactured a 13-3 run to go up 85-73 heading to the fourth quarter.

Portland was able to trim the deficit to three on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but they could get no closer as the Slam was always able to answer on the offensive end. A three-pointer by Poole with 3:05 left but the Slam up by 13 and essentially ended the Chinooks' hope of a comeback.

Poole finished the game with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, but was narrowly bested on the scoresheet by guard Paul Hafford, who finished with 21 points.

Forward Everett Spencer finished as Portland's scoring leader with 20 points, while forward Jared Cunningham also had a strong game with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Slam head on the road for a pair of games in Orlando next weekend, before returning home for a match-up with the 2012 IBL Champion Vancouver Volcanoes on Friday, May 11. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
