MILFORD, CT - The United States Basketball League, Inc. (USBL) announced today that Tom Nelson, the 2003 USBL Executive of the Year, has resigned his position with the 2003 USBL Champion Dodge City Legend to take a simular position with divisional rival Oklahoma Storm.
Nelson capped off his fourth season in the United States Basketball League with his second USBL Championship and the Executive of the Year award as general manager of the Dodge City Legend. Now Nelson takes on a new challenge as he takes the reins of the Legend's arch-rival, the Oklahoma Storm.
"I'm glad that this building and this team are on my side now." Nelson said. "As an opponent, this was the hardest place to play in the USBL."
Nelson stated that it was time for new challenges and new opportunities. "I created my dream job in Dodge City with the Legend." Nelson commented. "After four years, though, I didn't know how much better it could get. I have always had a lot of respect for James Bryant, Todd Chambers and the Storm organization. When opportunity knocked, Julie (Nelson's wife) and I answered, came to Enid and were very impressed with the city and the potential."
The Legend posted a USBL record 28 wins this summer, including a USBL record 18-0 mark at home, on their way to the USBL Championship. It was Nelson's second title after winning in their inaugural season in 2000.
"The Legend and the Storm have always been intertwined." Nelson said. "We entered the league a day apart in 2000, played in the 2000 USBL Championship Game as first year franchises, and have played some classic games, including this season's wild overtime game in the USBL semi-finals."
"It's great to have Tom on board with the Oklahoma Storm." Oklahoma Storm Owner James Bryant stated. "I think that this shows the commitment that we have to keeping professional basketball in Enid. We wanted one of the best GM's in the USBL, and we got him."
"Congratulations to Tom and his family on this new opportunity in Oklahoma. Tom will bring his desire and enthusiasm to Enid, improving an already outstanding franchise," stated USBL Founder and Commissioner Daniel T. Meisenheimer III.
