Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA BAY - This past Saturday, November 7, the Tampa Bay Storm held its first open tryout in Tampa. The day was a success, drawing in over 150 participants to AMALIE Arena, which included hopefuls from as far away as Italy.
"This was one of the best tryouts we've had in years," said Storm head coach Lawrence Samuels. "We had the most participants ever and I think we found some great talent. We'll evaluate everyone and go from there."
The day also saw a surprise appearance from AFL Hall of Famer and Storm Legend, George LaFrance, who had some encouraging words to say about the tryout.
"This is a great experience and opportunity for these participants," said LaFrance. "Everyone that came here today gets to live out their dream even if it's only for a few hours. It's excellent."
One of those hopefuls was Marcello Mutascio, member of the Italian National American Football team in Italy. Mutascio came from Verona, Italy to become the first player from the National team to try out for a professional American football team.
"This is the first time I tried out in America for a professional football team," said Mutascio. "This is a dream come true. I've dreamt about this moment for many years and now I've tried out and I'm very happy."
Mutascio was one of several athletes that were put through a rigorous set of testing that included a 40-yard dash and a 20-yard shuttle run, as well as individual and one-on-one drills. The purpose of which was to find those players that can make the Storm.
"We're here looking for the diamonds in the rough," said Samuels. "Last season we found Kendrick Ings and he went to the Detroit Lions this past offseason. The sky is the limit when you come and tryout."
