Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA - The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm have signed free agent lineman Tom Briggs and fullback Jason Schule today, Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum announced. In another roster move the team waived defensive back Alex Wallace.
"We are excited to have Tom back for 2008," said Marcum. "He is a tough, high motor guy. He played most of last season with a broken hand and was still productive. Schule had a great season in af2 and is a high intensity guy. We expect him to come in and compete for the fullback job."
Briggs, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound lineman from the University of West Virginia, is an 11-year veteran of the Arena Football League. He recorded 28.5 tackles, five sacks and four forced fumbles in 2007 despite playing the second half of the season with a broken left hand. Briggs currently ranks third all-time in the AFL with 46 career sacks and is tied for fifth with 19 career forced fumbles.
Prior to breaking into the AFL he spent 1993 on the Atlanta Falcons' training camp roster and played in the Canadian Football League with the Birmingham Barracudas and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In 1997 he joined the Portland Forest Dragons and spent the following season with the Anaheim Piranhas before rejoining the Forest Dragons. In 2000, he moved with the Forest Dragons as they relocated to Oklahoma. They later became the Austin Wranglers. During his time in Oklahoma he received Second Team All-Arena honors in 2000 and was named to the 2001 All-Ironman Team.
In 2002 he joined the Dallas Desperados and went on to become the team's then all-time leader in sacks in a season (10) and career sacks (12.5). The following season he earned Lineman of the Year, First Team All-Arena and All-Ironman honors. He then joined the Austin Wranglers (2004-06) and went on to become the team's all-time leader in sacks (10.5) and set a franchise record with 8.5 sacks in a season. He also earned First Team All-Arena Honors in 2004 and was named a finalist for Lineman of the Year award for the sixth consecutive year.
Schule, 5-11, 250-pounds will make the jump from af2 to the AFL as he enters his rookie season with the Storm. The top af2 rusher in 2007 (351 yards, 89 carries) and First Team All-af2 fullback made an impression on the coaching staff at an open tryout. Schule led the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings in rush yards (351), attempts (89), rush touchdowns (20) and was second on the team in total touchdowns (24). He played collegiately at the University Louisiana-Monroe where he earned Second Team All-Sunbelt Conference at linebacker in 2005.
