Storm Open Tryout a Success
November 17, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release
Tampa Bay - The Tampa Bay Storm, in conjunction with Prospect Proving Ground, Inc., held its first open tryout in preparation for the 2015 season on Sunday, November 16. Over a 100 hopefuls showed up to AMALIE Arena to participate in a series of drills tailored to the game of arena football.
"We saw a lot of talent out there today," said Storm head coach Lawrence Samuels. "This was one of the best groups we've had in recent years and it was a pleasure to work with them."
The Storm coaching staff put the participants through a number of drills including the 40-yard dash, a 20-yard short shuttle, and a 20-yard L-Drill. The team also incorporated new drills that included a high motion 40 and a peddle 40.
"We developed these drills specifically for the receivers and defensive backs," said Samuels. "The tests were devised to test the in-game speed of the players versus a standard track stance."
Many participants traveled from around the country to participate in the tryout, with a majority coming from the state of Florida. While the experience range varied, each participant brought something to the table, giving the coaching staff a lot to think about.
"The team appreciated all of the participants that came out," said Samuels. "The talent level was high but at the end of the day tough decisions must be made. The coaching staff will go back to review the film to see which players brought their 'A' game."
The Storm will hold a second open tryout in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida on Sunday, December 13.
