Storm Concentrate on Special Team in Training Camp

March 16, 2016 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA BAY - The Storm took the field today with the purpose of learning, and installing, the special teams plays. To some, the game of football may just be offense and defense, but another phase of the game is special teams. It is important to excel in all aspects of the game, including special teams, in order to be successful on the football field.

"We have to be successful in all phases of the game if we want to win," said head coach Lawrence Samuels. "It is so important because it sets the tone for the entire game."

The special teams practice is good not only for practicing returns, but it is also good for working on blocking schemes. One missed assignment could mean the difference between a touchdown or poor field position. One player looking at everything is kick returner Gerald Young.

"Today was a learning day and the staff stressed to us the importance of special teams," said Young. "From a return standpoint, we need to make sure everyone knows their assignments. One missed assignment could hurt the team as a whole."

Another area the team wanted to work on was kicking. With some new personnel, the learning day was essential for perfecting the kicking game.

"We have the personnel to be successful on special teams," said kicker Craig Peterson. "We just need to work together and iron out the wrinkles, but when it's all said and done, we'll be ready to go on opening night."

Look for the Storm to learn and continue to work together to improve each and every day.

Quote of the Day: "This was a learning day. Without knowledge and perfection, we will not attain our ultimate goal of a championship. That is why days like this are so important." - Wide receiver Phillip Barnett.
