Storm Adds to Offense and Defense

TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Storm acquired offensive lineman Carl Johnson, and defensive backs Jerrell Young, Isiah Wiley and Travaun Nixon, announced vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch.

"We felt that we needed to improve on both sides of the ball," said Gooch. "It will be essential for us to build on last season's success in the defensive backfield, and protect the quarterback, if we are to succeed in the coming season."

Johnson (6-foot-6, 345 lbs., Florida) will enter his first season with the Tampa Bay Storm. A versatile lineman, he saw action at the left tackle, left guard and center positions. The national champion (2008) started in 33-of-50 games for the Gators and spent part of the 2011 season with the New Orleans Saints (NFL).

Young (6-foot-1, 205 lbs., South Florida), a local product out of Gibbs High School (St. Petersburg, FL), enters his first season in the Arena Football League. The former USF standout played four seasons with the Bulls, starting in 30-of-46 games. He tallied 138 total tackles, including 5.5 tackles for a loss of 11 yards. He also reeled in five interceptions to go along with eight pass breakups and a forced fumble. Young spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL) in 2012.

Wiley (6-foot, 180 lbs., Belhaven) begins his rookie season with the Tampa Bay Storm. He began his collegiate career with Arizona Western Junior College before settling in at Belhaven for his senior year. Wiley played in 10 games for the Blazers finishing with 23 total tackles, two interceptions, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles. He attended the 2013 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL) rookie mini-camp.

Nixon (6-foot, 205 lbs., UTEP) played two seasons (2008-09) at Ventura Junior College before transferring to UTEP. He appeared in 24 games for the Miners, starting in 16, and finished his UTEP career with 125 tackles including 5.5 tackles for a loss. He also hauled in eight interceptions and had 15 passes defended. Nixon also played on special teams and had eight punt returns for 129 yards to go along with six kick returns for 122 yards.
