STLFC Draws 1-1 against Louisville in Final Preseason Game

March 10, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release

EVANSVILLE, In. - Saint Louis FC drew 1-1 against defending USL Cup champion Louisville City FC in their final preseason game hosted at the University of Evansville. The team will return to St. Louis for training as they prepare to face Rio Grande Valley FC in the USL regular season opener on March 16.

STLFC started strongly in the first half with decent spells of possession and pressed high on Louisville when they had the ball. The pressure from Saint Louis FC forward Kyle Greig led to the first goal in the 3rd minute as the Louisville defender put a back pass into his own net. Louisville City FC would grow into the game and earned six corners as they searched for the equalizer but the half would finish 1-0.

The second half saw a number of substitutions made by both teams and the game was mostly back and forth. STLFC came close to doubling their advantage when Kadeem Dacres hit the crossbar from outside the box in the 55th minute. The next chance fell to Christian Volesky as he was played on goal by Kyle Culbertson but the Louisville goalkeeper smothered the shot. Louisville City FC would equalize in the 72nd minute with Niall McCabe poking home the rebound after Jake Fenlason made the initial save on a shot from outside the box. Louisville had a chance to win with an indirect free kick inside the penalty area in the 86th minute but the effort was blocked and the game would finish level at 1-1.

"The game was exactly what we needed at this point," said STLFC Head Coach Anthony Pulis. "Our decision making, speed and quality of passing is certainly something that has to get better all over the field. Defensively we did alright, but still aspects of that need addressing as well. Give credit to Louisville, I thought they played some good football at times and certainly gave us a stiff test. We'll review the film, analyze what went well, what didn't go well and learn from it moving onto RGV next week. Finally, a massive thanks to all the fans and supporters who made the trip to Evansville."
