Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash.-The Bellingham Slam broke open a close game with a third quarter run as they defeated the Olympia Reign, 122-99, in an International Basketball League game on Saturday at Whatcom Pavilion.
The Reign (0-1), playing their first game of the season, played competitive for much of the first half before Paul Hafford hit a jumper at the second quarter buzzer to give the Slam 59-47 lead going into halftime.
But Bellingham (2-0) was able to break the game wide open to start the second half, as they held Olympia to a single field goal in the first six minutes of the third quarter to take a 73-49 lead.
The Reign did put together a late charge as they narrowed the gap to 14, at 97-83, on a Mike Ward three-pointer with 6:31left in the game. Following a timeout, the Slam responded offensively to put the margin back into the twenties and remove any doubt as to the outcome.
Stevenson led six Slam players in double figures with 32 points. Morris Anderson finished with 18, while Lukas Henne had 17.
Ward was the star for an undermanned Olympiateam, scoring 30 points and adding seven rebounds.
The Slam round out their April homestand with a game against the Vancouver Volcanoes on April 29. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.at Whatcom Pavilion.
